Historia
Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

the narrator ruined the story. Terrible.
Revisado: 03-06-25
Interesting story. Terrible sing song narration with unnatural cadence. the story was well composed with three dimensional characters. I stick with it though I hated hated hated the reading style. I almost wonder if it was AI narrated. I wish I had bought a print version. Audible and it's publishers really need to rethink reader experience

I wanted to love this series. It seemed right up my alley with magic, supernatural, superheroes, and strong women leads. The story had some satisfying elements, but the author relied heavily on info dumps at confusing points to tell the reader what was going on. The young women weren't terribly authentic--I don't know any teens who talk the way these people did. I felt like the characters spoke in ways that were meant to force them into being hip. They were surely not multi-dimensional or even terribly interesting. Such talented young women would have a lot more emotion, empathy, and imagination than these ladies who were primarily interested in bickering with family and finding boyfriends. I struggled through the entire 40-some hours, hoping for redeeming value, but it was not to be. Seriously, I nodded off several times. Even if the target audience is YA, this series falls far short of being satisfying, suspenseful, or believable, And the story arc of the evil corporate entity is just lame. I wish I had the time back. On the plus side, the narrator was better than many.

Historia
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

Superheroes have always been Leia Birch Briggs' weakness. One tequila-soaked night at a comics convention, the usually level-headed graphic novelist is swept off her barstool by a handsome and anonymous Batman. It turns out the caped crusader has left her with more than just a nice, fuzzy memory. She's having a baby boy - an unexpected but not unhappy development in the 38-year-old's life.

the writer and narrator seemed like key and distant. I understand why that might be, But I couldn't stay with the story. A lot of repetition and not much we haven't read before. I empathize, but the story did not pull me in.

Historia
This stunning debut novel from Australian author Lucy Christopher generated considerable buzz for its nonstop suspense and breathtaking imagery. Sixteen-year-old Gemma is on a layover at Bangkok Airport, headed to Vietnam with her parents. Then the vaguely familiar Ty drugs Gemma’s drink and steals her away. Her head swirling in confusion, Gemma soon finds herself fighting to survive in the unforgiving Outback.

No idea why the author made the choices she made
Revisado: 01-11-24
I tried to stay with this story but I simply couldn't Here's the problem. The author chose to write in second person. In other words, the narrator is speaking to her antagonist. She tells him the story like this, You stood up, your healing done. You didn't make another sound. Maybe you were dreaming. I found you in the kitchen, blahblahblah.
If she went through this entire story side-by-side with him, why on earth would it make sense for her to be relating the action to him as though it was all news to him. This device was so distracting that I could not stay in the story. I kept thinking about why the heck it was written that way. If, at the end, the reader gets a reason for this, I don't know what it would be. I disliked the artifice of impressing me with an unconventional technique.
I didn't find the story compelling, the characters relatable, or the book worth my effort. I'd pass if I were you.

The first third is terrible to listen to
Revisado: 07-10-23
This is an important book and who ever chose Ann Marie Lee to narrate the first third should not be in the position of making such choices. The story is historic, dark, and tragic. Ms. Le''s narration is so perky and pre-schoolish that it will make your teeth hurt. I had to turn the speed up to 130 in order to get by this section at all. The other narrators are fine. I will say, I am rethinking my 15 year-old subscription to Audible. By far, most of the new narrators are awful. The book is packed with details and facts in a well-written telling. I'm looking forward to the movie in October. My bottom line recommendation? Read the book -- it's worth while. But read it in print and forget about the audiobook.
