I enjoy the book, often forgetting it isn't narrated by the author. I did find the chapters on Stocks and on rhe NFL draft to be a bit boring. I would also say that if you need an accompanying PDF of sone 30+ graphs, maybe the full book isn't neant to be on audio. But overall I enjoyed it

One of the original reality TV stars tells her side of the story. I was really surprised by this book. Kelly O seems really genuine, sharing her insights and memories of her family, growing up on tour, working in showbiz, fighting against the "nepo baby" before that term was even coined, and her struggles with addiction and body image.
The book is structured as a series of letters to different people or subjects. The book full of profanity (she IS an Osborne after all), so caveat emptor there. Another warning: there's an entire chapter dedicated to her vagina. But you really feel like she's genuine, and really wants to take responsibility for her life, both the good and the bad.

First, I love Manson's voice. But the shtick of "I'm going to pepper profanity in to catch your attention" gets kind of old. I'm no prude, and there are some instances where it works well, but there are several more where it just feels forced.

That said, the book is actually very insightful. Manson thoughtfully explores the ideas of hope, pain, sacrifice, pleasure and the pursuit of happiness and offers some thoughts about them. He can get long winded, some times beating a dead horse and other times you have to carefully follow the thread to get to the point, but stick with it, and I think it's rewarding.

Forget everything you think you know about Britney. A lot has been said and written about her... she's perhaps one of the most talked about people of the 21st century.
Finally for free after a conservatorship lasting 13 years, she is able to tell her own story and does so pretty thoroughly. From her early days in Louisiana, to working on the Mickey Mouse club and on talent shows, to being the biggest pop star in the world before it all came crashing down.
The book challenges the double standards held against women, Spears may curse a lot and ramble at points, but her story is a powerful lesson about the problems of celebrity culture and the paparazzi, sexism in the entertainment industry, sycophants who use you for your money, and the way we treat people with mental illness.
No one, I repeat NO ONE, should have had to go through what she went through with the conservatorship, and I hope by sharing her story she has helped lots of other people.

Typical Gladwell but still good

The book uses the tale of David and Goliath as an introduction and sort of an overall theme to the stories hw presents here. As usual, Gladwell seeks to subvert expectations and show aspects that mays not have been considered. But as usual, his anecdotes, studies and statistics, though they are carefully woven together, are often cherry picked and should not be considered the final verdict (even if he delivers them with the same conviction as a preacher would of the Gospel from which the title originates).

I'll admit: I was suspicious of Anthony Bourdain. The near reverence with which some food bros refer to him evoked the way some people idolized the Joker or Tyler Durden. After listening to this book, I have to say, he's a great storyteller, and someone who really appreciates food. I still think he is often worshipped for all the wrong reasons, but that should not put you off of him.

The book runs roughly chronologically, sometimes skipping around but not much. From his first fresh oyster, to his early days of cooking, to becoming a renowned Chef with a capital C (although he would argue he's a cook with a lowercase "c"), Bourdain describes his life and career, along with lots of behind the scenes anecdotes, in his thick New York accent and often profane language.

Throughout, he gives advice to home cooks, restaurant goers and aspiring chefs. He tells tells of debauchery, "Italian Fraternal Organizations", petty crime, drinking binges and drug benders, and other behind the kitchen door tales.

Some of the language would be considered inappropriate today, and rightly so. However, Bourdain is also quite progressive for his time, extolling the virtues of migrant workers, hanging out with gays, and appreciating women who can hang in the professional restaurant environment.

Gladwell's third book addresses people and events that are Outliers...outside the norm or average. From high powered NYC lawyers, titans of the computer and software industry, hockey players to plane crashes, Gladwell looks at the extenuating circumstances such as the cultural and historical context, to explain how those circumstances contributed to the success (or failure, in the case of plane crashes).

While what he says is important, it is almost presented as the only contributing factor. Using just one example, we'll take Bill Gates. Gates was born at a specific time and allowed him access to a type of computer that he could practice on that was extremely rare. All these are factors, yes. But it doesn't mean that Bill Gates wasn't a genius. It doesn't mean that he didn't have the business savvy to form a multimillion Dollar company. It does mean that there were probably other potential geniuses around the country who didn't have the same opportunities. So take all that with a grain of salt. Still it's a great book that covers a lot, and ends on a really interesting personal note.

A Memoir/Self-Help Hybrid

I've always liked Nick Carter, more than the other Backstreet Boys. Maybe part of it was my teenage crush on him. Maybe because we are pretty close in age, and we are both from Tampa. So I was excited to listen to this book. That is probably why I gave it four stars when it's really more like 3½.

This book was partly inspired by the death of a family member, and partly by Nick's own struggles with sobriety and other issues. He means well, trying to use his story as a motivator for people who may be dealing with the same issues.

One of the problems is Nick uses almost every self-help cliché phrase out there. That, along with the book being narrated by someone else, makes a lot of the book fall flat. Since this isn't a traditional memoir, a lot of the positive aspects of his life get left out also, which also makes him clarify ad nauseum "I'm not complaining. I've been very lucky".

The book is easy to get through, although the narrator doesn't pause enough between the sub-chapters to allow you to find smooth stopping points. I suspect, due to the casual tone of the book, that Nick also didn't use a ghost writer.

You won't find too much juicy gossip here, but you will find an earnest and sincere attempt to help others. I hope he decides to write a second memoir, one with more positive stories about life with Backstreet Boys, and life as a husband and father of three.

It took me forever to finish this book, but not because of the content or a dislike for it. Gladwell does a good job of taking us on a journey through our subconscious split-second impulses, opinions and decisions. First with some explanations about where they come from and how they can be beneficial, and then a hard look at where they can fall short. First innocently like the Pepsi taste tests, then in dangerous ways such as the Amadou Diallo shooting in NYC. The lesson is not "trust your first instinct" but rather 'trust it, but realize it can be biased, and look for ways to overcome that bias".

Mariah doesn't hold back

A lot has been said about Mariah Carey, and in this book she attempts to tell her side of things. It's mostly chronological with some jumping around here and there. She talks about growing up on Long Island, the product of a biracial marriage that eas falling apart before she came along, her struggles with her family, her climb to success, her tumultuous first marriage, and much more. She is sometimes.harsh, especially on the subject of her siblings (so much so that they're suing her), mother and first husband, Columbia records executive Tommy Motola. On other subjects you begin to wonder if she's an unreliable narrator, such as her gushing praise of her father, or her "everyone's fault but mine" telling of her 2001 near-breakdown.

A major part of sm audible version of a book is how the author narrates it, and here she knocks it out of the park. She really sounds like she's telling you her story. The memoir is everything: funny, heartbreaking, sentimental, and THOROUGH (the audible version runs nearly 12 hours). Even if you aren't a "lamb" (a die hard fan), I recommend it.
