A truly skilful narrative
Revisado: 02-16-25
I enjoyed the first person narrative of a teenager woven around complex political circumstances and a first ( or second?) contact circumstance. Teenage developmental concerns were delicately explored, as were social, religious and ecological issues. Likewise the darker aspects of humanity were examined, along with humanity’s place within the ecology of the Congo jungle. All this was embedded within a science fiction first contact narrative which was a skilful and interesting reading journey in itself. I am so glad to have discovered this author, and intend to read all his works.

Historia
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Skilful, well constructed
Revisado: 09-25-24
The dramatisation was clear to follow, despite the complexity of the story lines and many characters. Sound effects were excellent and seamlessly blended with the excellent dialogue. I quite enjoy a bit of time travel, and there were many twists and turns in this tale. The final one was very thought provoking.

They will be made active and contributing members of society. But they will never be normal.

An extraordinary depiction of autism within the context of a fictional narrative
Revisado: 12-03-23
I found this to be an extraordinary insight into the lived experience of an autistic person, so very different to my own way of being. The narrative within which this is embedded is both thought provoking and engaging.

Historia
Twins Jeanie and Julius have always been different from other people. At 51 years old, they still live with their mother, Dot, in rural isolation and poverty. Inside the walls of their old cottage, they make music, and in the garden they grow (and sometimes kill, everything they need for sustenance. But when Dot dies suddenly, threats to their livelihood start raining down. Jeanie and Julius would do anything to preserve their small sanctuary against the perils of the outside world.

Historia
Natasha Doroshenko, a Ukrainian woman who has been arrested for murdering her Danish fiancé, escapes police custody on her way to an interrogation in Copenhagen's police headquarters. It isn't the first time Natasha has lost a partner to violent ends: her first husband was also murdered three years earlier, in Kiev, and in the same manner, his hands broken. At the same time, someone tries to abduct Natasha's eight-year-old daughter from the Red Cross center that has been caring for her while her mother, an illegal immigrant, was in jail.

Historia
In this feverishly anticipated follow-up to 2011’s critically acclaimed The Boy in the Suitcase, Danish Red Cross nurse Nina Borg doesn’t realize she is putting life and family on the line when she tries to treat a group of sick Hungarian gypsies who are living illegally in a Copenhagen garage. Nina has unwittingly thrown herself into a deadly nest of the unscrupulous and the desperate, and what is at stake is much more terrifying than anyone had realized.

Revisado: 08-11-16
Excellent story but overdramatised to point of shrillness at times. Appalling editing with many repeats throughout narrative.

Historia
"I had never planned to become a savanna baboon when I grew up; instead, I had always assumed I would become a mountain gorilla," writes Robert Sapolsky in this witty and riveting chronicle of a scientist's coming-of-age in remote Africa. An exhilarating account of Sapolsky's twenty-one-year study of a troop of rambunctious baboons in Kenya, A Primate's Memoir interweaves serious scientific observations with wry commentary about the challenges and pleasures of living in the wilds of the Serengeti-for man and beast alike.

Smart, witty and incisive, depicting humans as we really are, not as how we believe ourselves to be! Most enjoyable.
