This is a fun and beautiful story! So many human elements of growth. Tissues needed at times. Very touching, very amusing. Serious issues presented in a heartwarming, safe, supportive narrative.

Thoroughly wonderful characters that are a sheer delight!

This is NOT a Jane-Austen feeling Regency novel. There is a more colloquial, modern feel to the story, BUT it is delivered in sophisticated storytelling so it does not feel out of place or uncomfortable—there is nothing glaring that makes it embarrassingly wrong (even though it was highly improbable for its time. Except for the wardrobe situation… which she doesn’t make a big deal about, so it glosses over fine…but it was a smidge annoying that the wardrobe issue with the heroine wasn’t more realistically addressed…but that is nit-picking).

I DO wish that there had been more time passing for additional experiences and interactions between hero and heroine—definitely missed out on some deeper relationship growth that I really wanted (Like…WHY did we never get to see them shoot together?!?) As well as making it a little more realistic. (Also, physical recovery and healing in most Regency novels is too short *insert eyeroll* seriously, just add another week and that helps! But I digress…)

Narrator is great. I usually really enjoy her narrations. MUST listen on about 1.2 speed for it to sound natural (it is oddly slowed down otherwise). My only complaint with the narrator is her choice of accent with the heroine. It super bugged me and took a little while to get over.
Perhaps there should have been something in the story itself addressing elocution, as it would have been appropriate and fitting per the heroine’s talents. BUT overall, it still is a fabulous listen, and narrator does well.

In sum, i loved this. It made me laugh and cry and swoon! A true delight!! I’m so glad i listened.

This is the first book from this author which i have encountered.

It was a DELIGHTFUL story!! And a solid clean, sweet Regency Romance.

There were a few details I think were incongruent and i had to get over (no ladies maid? C’mon!…that made her seem more naive and uncultured instead of an Earl’s daughter; it was an embarrassing author’s choice i disagree with). I think perhaps there could have been a little bit more interaction between Hero and Heroine to show the positive changes in Hero. There were also some aspects of the writing that made the heroine less bold than i initially expected her to be (one of the incongruences that bothered me). Additionally, I wished for a little deeper development of some aspects of the story, or a tying-in more completely. Perhaps this was because I grew to enjoy the characters and storyline so well. Overall, it was truly a delight!

The ending provided an excellent set up for a series (i hope there is a series!), and I am pleasantly looking forward to listening to how everyone’s stories pan out!

Narration:
All AI narrations make mistakes and can be annoying at times. Honestly, this AI narration was easy to get used to, and i felt it was fine. (I refuse to listen to awful narrations!) This one felt like I could have been reading it allowed… only with a better accent. I sped up the listening speed just a touch at times.

This was a super cute novella! Lots of endearing moments.
Sure, there could have been a bit more development, but it’s a novella.
It was a delightful quick listen.

This is a good virtual voice—listening on 1.15 speed is usually just about right.

Impressively developed for a novella.

Well-written, darling story that made me smile. A perfect quick read/listen! (Obviously, it is a novella, and so it moves fast. BUT it is written well.)

This is the first book by this author that i’ve encountered, and i look forward to reading more of her work!

AI narration is rarely ever as good as a real person reading, but it was satisfactory—i’ve heard better and worse; the story was still very enjoyable to listen to! (Note: i listened at 1.15-1.2 speed)

Cute for a young, new-to-Regency reader

Author writes some lovely phrases, but uses an over-abundance of similes and metaphors. Voice and perspective of the writing feel a little off. Even for a novella, the story seems too forced. It’s also not apparent if the author is aware of time-period customs, or just ignores them for simplicity of the story.

The AI narration does not help this story be more appealing. I wonder if i would have enjoyed it as a quick read instead of listening.

Overall, the idea is cute, but underdeveloped. The similes and metaphors are written well, but overdone. Perhaps this is a good novella better suited for a younger teenage audience with little familiarity with Regency social customs.

For starters, if anyone has issue with the moral idea of smuggling and common practices of the time, the author’s note at the end is very helpful in providing context. Well done, Ms. Stockton!

Kasey Stockton is a fantastic author!! And the narrator did a wonderful job. This entire series has been a delight to enjoy!!

This final story felt a little disjointed from the others, in part because i couldn’t quite place the station/status/financial position of the MacKenzie family. It felt they had “come down in the world” a little more than I had previously imagined—i knew they would be walking the line between gentility and working class, but the details needed to be sorted with more clarity. (How could they afford a season, but mingle as they did???—-just more clarity!!) Although I loved the sense of community.

I also felt the story was lacking in depth of detail with the characters, background, context, and relationship building. It just seemed there were details in the story I wish had been filled in better to make it more rich and real and connected. (And it ended a bit abruptly). It read somewhat closer to a novella in that way, which was disappointing.

I still loved the storyline for Pippa—it seemed to fit her perfectly! I just wish it could have gone through more editing to make it deeper.

In all, the series is an absolute keeper, and it is wonderful to have Pippa’s story included!

Thoroughly WONDERFUL story, captivating from the very first lines. Deep characters you increasingly love through their journeys. Complex storyline. Kasey Stockton is a brilliant storyteller who does not disappoint!!! This was a marvelous read. And the narrator was absolutely exceptional with each character’s unique voice—she captures and portrays them perfectly. Perfect tone, flow, pace, delivery, and expression. (Victoria Brazier rivals Alex Wyndam for voicing and swoon!)

Ohmygoodness, this book is amazing!! I have always loved Rebecca Connolly’s intricate characters, formidable stories, and beautiful story development. Oh! I am only halfway through and i feel this is one of my favorites of hers! Characters are so real, so deep, SO witty!, so lovable. And i absolutely love the journey the characters take with each other, and the discovery they make within themselves as they journey together. The connection between hero and heroine is dynamite, but the connection and interaction of all characters is just so well done. And for the romance aspect… well, she always does an exceptional job letting the romance develop naturally, the stirrings of the heart described so well; the romantic tension is just right—and clean!! Which is perfect.

There are many good stories i can rate highly. But this is one that you read and go “now THIS is a 5-star book!!” In sum, it is an exceptional regency romance!

Ps- Jessica Elissa Boyd is a fantastic narrator!!!!

Uncharacteristic, Petty, Laborious: disappointment

I’m only halfway through and i have to continually stop for breaks. This is NOT a “cute short story,” although it could have and should have been. Interactions are overall petty and degrade more than build them. The story drags. Sometimes extensive detail and participation in every conversation enriches the story and characters; sadly, this just draws out annoying interactions that seem to barely build the story. SO much pettiness from the two main characters i had grown to love and admire. This narrative just makes Collin and Kit seem terribly immature and a bit daft—which eliminates the honor in Colins character, and obliterates the finesse and poise that were innate to Kit. I love these characters and their families, and want to hear more!! But this has not been an inspiring narrative to further their stories. Perhaps it will get better and have a decent conclusion?
Ugh. I am so disappointed. I absolutely adore Rebecca Connolly’s work and stories. But this one is too much, and yet not near enough. Substantively missed the mark.

Of course this is a classic Jane Austen love story with all of the social intrigue, class disparities, and witty commentary that are characteristic of her writing. Bit the narration—oh! It could not be more perfectly performed! Frances Barber does an outstanding reading which truly brings this novel to life!
