Historia
Known for providing incisive progressive political analysis without being dogmatic, popular radio and podcast host David Pakman delves into the vicious cycle of reactionary political ideology. It's no secret how the right-wing has benefited and capitalized off disinformation and polarization of US politics. Critical thinking and media literacy are on a rapid decline, and our republic is unable to agree upon a shared set of facts. Pakman challenges the right-wing head-on and encourages listeners to understand how the status quo became the status quo.

well done even if I don't agree on all points
Revisado: 03-26-25
You had me up till incrimentalism. I wish small baby steps towards progress could be the solution, but I don't see it. So many problems require big steps. incrimentalism is like solving issues with the unhoused by giving them all a quarter of putting 1/10th of them in 3 bedroom family homes in the suburbs. Did you do something yes but to most it will look like you did nothing and opposition will look what you spent to no noticable accomplishment of stated goals. You settled for a half measure and now it's ammo to be thrown in your face and raised for decades of why we should do nothing. sometimes the baby step really is worse than standing still or even stepping backward. I don't like that but it seems apparent. I know the example is not the best making the right baby step is important and the examples I gave are pretty bad baby steps. Great book though. I've already bought more copies to give a few folks.

A compact and powerful tale that reminds me of everything I love about Pat Rothfuss writing and why it is always worth the wait.

Historia
Modern libertarianism began with Friedrich Hayek’s admirable corrective to the Depression-era vogue for central economic planning. It resisted oppressive state power. It showed how capitalism could improve life for everyone. Yet today, it’s a toxic blend of anarchism, disdain for the weak, and rationalization for environmental catastrophe. Andrew Koppelman’s book traces libertarianism’s evolution from Hayek’s moderate pro-market ideas to the romantic fabulism of Murray Rothbard, Robert Nozick, and Ayn Rand, and Charles Koch’s promotion of climate change denial.

thank you it's what I needed
Revisado: 10-10-22
When I heard from this author during an appearance on an independents news show, I immediately looked up his book in the hopes it would help need with a problem I've been having. I have had an increasing gulf with a family friend over political differences in the last decade or so. I had grown up in a loosely conservative household and always saw this friend as less conservative but as I grew up and he grew old I shifted left and was shocked to find how far right of me his ideas seemed in recent years. I now understand that he's Libertarian and I feel this book has given me a better understanding of how our differences have become so pronounced and what might be a few ideas we might share. If nothing else, I at least know some of the finer points and weaknesses of the philosophy to bring to our future discussions. I even found, as the author intended, that there are ideals in the core philosophy of libertarianism that I agree with more than others I had been considering. I think it has sacrificed those ideals in favor of dogmatic adherence to minimal government at any cost and a disdain for the well-being of anyone else.

okay I'm going to finish this but

more pigeon English and " you insult my honor" bs right out the gate. I'm starting to think this might be a bit offensive not to mention the about savior complex going on with future soldiers having to deal with the ignorant locals and solve thier problems we did that already. I will finish the book and I'll change my review if this takes a twist but if it's just another book of the same trite hero rp I think this will stay and this will be where I get off this series.

good but a little derivative.
Revisado: 10-19-21
I enjoyed this book though perhaps I've just read listened to too many as I had to fight drawing comparisons from start to end. Having reached that end I am overall pleased with the story though it made me work to disregard all the things it reminded me of that I would say did it better. Familiar ideas even told but familiar voices, I don't know weather it will would be better if I had none of those other books to reference and compare to. Like a hint of a 5star dish you love made in some rustic cafe is it good or does it just remind me of something great I had before and want more of. I can't say. I'll say it's worth a credit and I'll say if there is more ahead for everfall I'll listen and find out.

excellent for starting or continuing the series
Revisado: 08-09-21
Not my first reading but my first listen and the place I chose to start my dive back into the series in advance of the screen adaptations.
I think it might be a truly great place to start and has an impact of how you might view characters later in the series. I still remember my first impressions in eye of the world, years and years ago, and I think if I had read this first instead of as a flash back side story in the middle my impressions might have been not completely different but more nuanced. Having this foundation on some of the key characters in the series might have helped me resist the urge to force them into some trope fantasy roles. they certainly eventually break out of those cookies cutters over the series but really never belonged there at the start.

Historia
The citizens of Azurvale are starting to feel the pressure. War with the Empire to the south is imminent, and there's talk of the city's adventurers being drafted into the campaign. Though this conflict seems inevitable and promises to be horrific, the common folk can do little but act like there's nothing wrong. Rather than lose sleep over something so wildly out of their control, they instead worry about tiny, personal, inconsequential issues. However, the people of Azurvale have yet to find out that their capital is already under threat.

not my favorite but the ending is good

Continues the series welll enough, at times feels a little disjointed. Love the ending though could kind of go anywhere it wants for the next one but still had a fun resolution.

a story that might be better as a movie than book
Revisado: 08-23-17
Mercer is a wonder. I don't know that I would have enjoyed this one as much without him.
The story was meh. Short for my tastes, but that is exacerbated by moments of predictability towards the start and needless hairthin dangeling plot threads at the end. Within a few minuets i was predicting the major twist of the book its various implications. By the time it came to pass i already could see the second twist and start to guess how the book would resolve. But as a surprise after everything is done, things are wrapped up, we get a Samuel l jackson esque after the credits oh you thought the story was over maybe there is more... which honestly felt like a concession to the idea of this being a movie and leaving the film company something to spin out a trilogy on. I think the movie has a lot of potential you can mask some of the narrative tellagrsphs with dazzling futuretech, fancy high tension camera work and pretty casting.
I could not find any indication this is the start of a series though the ending implies it might be. I can not think it would be one i would enjoy. Most of the philosophical delimas were carried through to what felt line a pretty satisfactory end and that was really all I found interesting or novel about the story.
