One of the best books I’ve ever listened to
Revisado: 03-10-25
My Audible library exceeds 1000 books. This book I plowed through in a weekend and was regularly saying to my family, “ This book is so enjoyable.” there are so many things to like about this book. I will attempt to list them.
This book reminds me of the Game of Thrones, but as a parody of how everything is constantly and consistently messed up.
The humor is regular and tongue in cheek, and sometimes laugh out loud.
It combines some of my favorite genres, including fantasy, lit RPG ish (without any of the stats, SO WONDERFUL) and comedy. There’s plenty of violence and thankfully no explicit sex.
The narration was fantastic throughout! Men’s and women’s voices were all consistent without weird accents to try and distinguish them.

Narrator was great but not much else was
Revisado: 04-25-24
This book felt like a prequel more then the start of the story. It took half the book for the solar storm to arrive and not much happened during that time other than introduction of characters.
Once the solar storm arrived, progression of character happened rapidly for an important characters and minimally for main characters.
Narration was great though. There were distinct voices and accents for different people that made it easy to identify who was speaking.

Torture and sex. Am I reading wizard’s first rule?
Revisado: 05-28-22
Performance is amazing. Story…I expect by the end of the series everyone will have been captured and tortured with some sort of sex torture involved. The story does have an interesting idea that is extrapolated ad nauseam and so many immortal foes that somehow mortals are trying to defeat.

In High Earth, digital entertainment is everything. Shows. Virtual worlds. Simulations - there’s something for everybody in a city where working for a living has been rendered obsolete by technological advancements. Even a short walk outside to visit with others is no longer necessary. Just load into the network and you can be with anyone, anywhere. For Asher Reinhart, nothing compares to Ignis; a live reality show that pushes human beings to their very extremes.

Curse you Rhett! All books now pale in comparison
Revisado: 04-17-21
I have read many of Rhett C. Bruno's books and typically find them to be good or excellent. this book passes all of them up in comparison. I have an audiobook collection of over 500 and have listened to a good portion of them. This is one of those books that will leave you considering and thinking long after you have finished it. I would say that it's similar to reading the bobiverse books without the comedy.
This book is, like it claims, a mix between The Truman Show and dystopian sci-fi, with some Mission Impossible thrown in. it is also a complete story so I do not expect a sequel to follow this although there is room for a sequel to follow the characters but it would be a very different book.
to highlight some of the positives I want to focus on pacing which was very good. the beginning was a little slow but the pace increases rapidly after the first few chapters are set up. there is little to no swearing in this book so it is safe for those who require this for their children or teenagers or themselves. character development is fantastic with plenty of growth of the main characters throughout the book. social commentary on our addiction to social media and our ideals of a perfect world are drawn throughout. the narration provided by the new McNamara and the consistently good Wheaton are great.
negatives are minor such as a fairly slow beginning and I encourage you dear reader to make it past the first four chapters because it is worth it. another negative is that the world outside the walls seems a little difficult to believe. I believe this is on purpose as it is there to provide an idea of what it means to have your eyes opened especially in today's age where everyone is glued to some sort of media device. of course I was glued to my media device until the book ended.

Revisado: 02-25-21
I blasted through this book within 2 days. There was plenty of intrigue, international espionage, and some science. The pace was fast and glazed over the slow times to jump ahead to the action. I will be checking out more of the author's books.

a perfectly narrated good book
Revisado: 04-16-20
first the narration. The narrator did a fantastic job pacing and annunciating the book. the characters all had a distinct and consistent voices. the pronunciation was the same throughout.
the story flowed smoothly from the beginning into the end. it was simple and not overly complex with a few twists and turns that were not over-the-top. the character progression was well-thought-out. this is a book that I recommended for my teenage son to read. I normally can't give a higher recommendation than that

One of the best I have listened to
Revisado: 02-25-20
I will start with the narration. Ray did a fantastic job as always. Voices were consistent and distinct per character. When Kyle was angry, I felt angry. When his wife showed love, I felt loved. He narrated as well as he did with the Bobiverse.
The story was well written with enough twists but not too many. There was enough predictability to make belief possible. This seemed to be written as a stand alone novel with enough story to tell another if it is well received. Character progression seemed plausible and was positive but with enough character flaws to make them relatable.
I would definitely like to see more from these same authors. I started recommending this one to family including my teenage son when I was half way through and it did not disappoint at the end.

At 17, Mei should be in high school, but skipping fourth grade was part of her parents' master plan. Now a freshman at MIT, she is on track to fulfill the rest of this predetermined future: become a doctor, marry a preapproved Taiwanese Ivy Leaguer, produce a litter of babies. With everything her parents have sacrificed to make her cushy life a reality, Mei can't bring herself to tell them the truth - that she (one) hates germs, (two) falls asleep in biology lectures, and (three) has a crush on her classmate Darren Takahashi, who is decidedly not Taiwanese.

I'm a white 40 year old white male and loved it
Revisado: 11-01-19
I was not fully aware of the cultural differences and requirements that this book made me aware of. I'm assuming that the culture is accurate and if it isn't it was well made up!
I do not know Mandarin Chinese but the narrator seem to transition easily into Mandarin and Japanese. She did a very good job with different voices including male voices and was consistent in their sound. Her voice was very clear even at 1.25 speed which is what I normally listen at.
although this book is about a girl who has just entered a college little emphasis was given on the classes in college. this book was primarily about the cultural difficulties that she had based on family life and light romance and college and not wanting the career her family had selected for her.

Why is every film or tv programme a sequel or a remake? Why are people so f***ing hung up about swearing? Why do the asterisks in that sentence make it okay? Why do so many people want to stop other people doing things, and how can they be stopped from stopping them? These and many other questions trouble David Mitchell. Join him on a tour of the absurdities of modern life - from Ryanair to Richard III, Downton Abbey to phone etiquette, UKIP to hot dogs made of cats.

great humor about politics, stupidity, and politics

there I said politics three times! this book is written with British politics in mind but applies to just about any political structure anywhere. it also talks a lot about the economy social weirdness and the human condition.
there is a fair amount of foul language in this book so listen to beware but I loved it.

The epic and highly anticipated conclusion to the listener-favorite series that had countless Audible listeners (and employees) hooked from the very first Bob - featuring, as always, a flawless performance from the inimitable Ray Porter. Being a sentient spaceship really should be more fun. But after spreading out through space for almost a century, Bob and his clones just can't stay out of trouble. They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct.

The best and most dramatic of the series.
Revisado: 04-01-19
I love this series an have just finished it for the second time. This book may not appeal to everyone like it did to me.
Although there is a lot of comedy in this book, it is not as constant as it is in the other books. This book is more thoughtful and has more heart-wrenching segments and helps to identify what would be the point how being a computer program or of living forever without any needs, desires, appetites, or passions.
We are at a time when this question is becoming more relatable since mapping the human brain and consciousness may be coming in the next few decades. What will drive us when we have no need of money, things, or social interaction?
