A sobering reminder of the fragility of freedom

it's hard to listen to this story and not see how our social and political culture has learned so little from the mistakes of the past, especially with the events of the 2020 American election. the paradox of freedom is that to obtain it without any restraint means taking freedom away from others, and to turn q blind eye to any facts and logic incompatible with your desires. a wise person understands and accepts their limits, while a tyrant has none

it came out almost 90 years ago. While technology has grown a lot, and I like to think people also have a little, we still have a lot of work to do to prevent despotism or fascism from taking root here

a short, but sweet science fiction story

an excellent story & narration, muffled recording

Putting aside how one feels about the universe of the book, it puts you in the mindset of Juan Rico. One hopes that the future won't turn out like this, cause most people won't see the cracks like we can.
while I think the narrator does an excellent job, the sound samples seem like he's speaking through a cardboard tube about 20% of the time. someone should fix that!

A promising start to another saga

If you're new to this series, don't start with this one, the twelfth entry not counting spinoffs!
if you've made it this far, you probably know what to expect: Geary and Co enter a new star system, some complications rise, they deal with them, and move on to the next. Still, these characters feel believable in their world and like they have agency in the story.
after the sequel series, frontiers, came to an end, it didn't feel like there was new ground to break. Time will tell with the new adventure to the Dancer Alien's world. what we got was a lot of setup. I'm fine with waiting a little longer for the payoff, as long as we get it

an engaging science fiction story as ever

it seems inspired by the science fiction classics, like Frankenstein, in it's criticism of the misuse of science for profit. I hope we learn it's lessons one day...
Also, I was surprised how much dialogue from the film comes directly from the book! the movie, cutting edge as it was, had to make allowances for the technology of 1991. I can see how they revisited some ideas in the panned third film.

a murder mystery with a twist - the sequel

the dispatcher is a world where people don't stay dead if they are murdered. This makes police work and crime more challenging, despite opening up new opportunities for professionals.
this time, the mystery feels more elaborate, yet solvable if you're paying attention to the details

An intriguing character drama, in space

there are six stories from six people on a mysterious journey to a mysterious world. I do t want to give away the game, but I'll will say it will keep you coming back to learn more. my only complaint is the "to be continued" ending of this book.

Audible made a good choice to get multiple actors to play the multiple parts. it's still an audiobook and not a radio play, which allows these narrators to play to their stengths

An engaging Science Fiction story for all ages

It's not easy to write a complex, yet brief story like this one. it has to be accessible, yet complicated. it has to be relatable, yet slightly fantastic. most importantly, it has to say something important about the human condition, and hopefully inspire the audience a little. in my opinion, this author and the audio crew pulled it off! well done!

I know this just came out, and I'm fine with how the story ended, but I wouldn't mind some kind of follow up somehow. I have no idea how that would work 😅

a fantastic book with a fantastic narrator!

If you love hard SF, you'd be nuts to pass on this book! I read it a couple years ago on a road trip for the family (my mom kept turning the car volume up because I was too quiet!), but this second go-around was worth it. The bonus chapter at the end is a nice touch as well
