The Anglin brothers had very little formal education. The author, a nephew of the Anglins, keeps the family tradition alive by writing an interesting story at a junior high level. There is almost no character or scene development, rather, the readers are given one sentence and expected to fill in all of the gaps to see things the way the author does. Did the Anglins escape and live out their lives in Brazil? I don't know, but it is a fun concept. The author, however, has no doubts based on circumstantial evidence, a lack of facts in any direction, and his own blatant desire to believe they did. Overall, it was a good listen, but not great or in depth.

Terrible, and audible is incapable of removing from your library so it will always be at the top of your keep listening list. This must be a virus.

Hated every minute of this podcast. Extra long credits that you have to listen to every 45 minutes. And audile can't delete this from my library, so it always appears at the very top of my listens as a reminder to a terrible decision to get this.

Readers Digest stories are longer

This book might as well summarize every murder that has taken place, ever. Some of the stories are very interesting, and I might look for the actual book, but in this they are shorter than Cliff Notes. The first couple were maybe 30 minutes long. After that, the stories are each 2 to 10 minutes. It doesn’t do any justice to the story, it barely even adds details. For example, the chapter on John Wayne Gacy was 10 minutes. The Ted Bundy chapter was three minutes. That isn’t even a teaser.

I assume you’ve heard of Ted Bundy. Here’s everything you learn about Ted Bundy in this book: 2 girls disappeared at Lake Sammamish. A guy named “Ted” who drove a volkswagon asked girls for help. Ted Bundy did it.

Kevin Pierce is an amazing narrator and the only saving factor of this book. Unfortunately, it is every bit as interesting as Pierce reading you the phone book.

Good story by a monosyllabic narcissist

If you have a fear of polysyllabic words, this is a great book for you. There are almost no words longer than two syllables in the entire book. Here are two of the longer words used so you can be prepared:
* Undercover - ok, this is just two 2-syllable words without a space.
* Mexico - I’m surprised he didn’t find a way to shorten this.

That aside, this is an interesting story, but not unlike any number of other “I infiltrated a motorcycle gang” books. The author is narcissistic, gods gift to everything he does, and completely lacks any awareness or empathy for those around him, from coworkers to family. I was actually amazed the ATF didn’t shut this operation down sooner as the author lost sight of any mission goals and continuously risked himself and others for very small payoff. It is like he assumed that once he got patched in, the Hells Angels would suddenly tell him every secret of every crime ever committed. Spoiler Alert: the Hells Angels still exist, years after this book was written. Somehow he didn’t manage to shut them down.

Best true crime book in a long time

I am a fan of true crime books, so I've listened to more than a few.

First of all, the narrator is Kevin Pierce. He is one of the best, so that alone is a reason to listen.

This book was really interesting. Each chapter deals with an innovative way to search for a clandestine grave, then follows it up up with a surprisingly detailed story of a true case that used this technology. Many of these cases may not have been enough to warrant their own book, but was truly fascinating to hear.

One nice aspect... this book was written in 2002, but it was updated in 2015. Each chapter has an epilogue following up on that case in the 13 years since original publishing.

If you enjoy true crime, I highly recommend this book. It was very entertaining and and still educational, which can be applied to other stories.

The author is a self described comedian. I'm guessing that is because no one else describes him that way. I tried for a few chapters, but I just couldn't. It is slow and uninteresting. Finally returned the book.

I was only vaguely aware of the existence of Go Ask Alice, and had never heard of Jays Journal. At a little younger than the fictional Alice or Jay, I was not much into Nixon or the drug wars. Still, this book was very well written and a fascinating insight to a predatory sociopath. It is absolutely amazing what a human mind is capable of doing when compassion and awareness are absent. I highly recommend this book, and even more if you’ve ever read GAA or JJ.

Inspirational story, terrible narration & writing

First of all, I was already very familiar with the Dick and Rick Hoyt story. It is amazing what they did and their devotion to each other. Truly inspirational. So I really wanted to love this book. But I had two major issues with it:

1. While Dick was amazing at so many things, writing was obviously not his strong suit. This book read like a resume more than an story. This book would have been vastly better with a ghost writer. It rarely went in depth on anything, rather, it was a bullet list of accomplishments.

2. This narrator was absolutely the wrong choice for this book. The narrator sounded like a stuffy self-absorbed dandy that you picture reclining in a dark oak trimmed room with a brandy snifter and reading the New Yorker. He has the annoying habit of dragging out the last syllable of every sentence and allowing it fade off into the distance. That's hardly how I envisioned Dick talking.

So, in summary: great story, lousy writing, and terrible narration.
