What a wonderful, lovely and unexpected voyage through, heretofore, uncharted waters. The audio book production, as well, does a beautiful job of taking the reader on a most thoughtful and evocative journey; while giving equal weight to writer, her story, process, and love of her characters.

I dwell in Steinbeck Country

I hold Steinbeck's stories of the Salinas Valley and Monterey Peninsula closer to the vest, almost like The Book of Common Prayer for the Episcopalian, pulling from the text at each new, or rereading, something deeply personal while equally universal.
Steinbeck loved and knew this area; with a profound reverence for its deep, rich earth and its history. He honed a keen observation of human interaction with nature, the hard-edged man, and indefinable woman, and loved most dearly the 'lost souls' among us, living on the fringe of town...looking in.
It is in the telling of these seemingly simple stories, I find some of the most profound tales of human nature, man against nature, and his ultimate relationship with God, often embattled on the page and most eloquently argued with only a single character--on the mountaintops, in a terrifying grove, or on a railcar.

An Old Favorite for the First Time

It is a unique experience to read a story one has seen adapted for film every year since childhood, and still approach it as if for the first time--and yet, amazingly, it read as if for the first time.

I was thrilled to travel w/the same four compatriots (and Toto) along that iconic yellow brick road replete w/both wicked and good witches at each compass point. But our friends have many adventures never explored in Hollywood's, color adaptation of L. Frank Baum's Oz; and it is these unexplored adventures braved by our kind and loyal friends: the scarecrow, the tin man, the cowardly lion, and of course, Dorothy that deepens our love of this story.

What a treat.

A Lovely Addition to Christmas Traditions

Total

Revisado: 12-26-15

I love Dickens' A Christmas Carol (sorry, there is no style capability on this keyboard; hence, no italics for the title...perhaps the next version, hint, hint, Amazon. Unless, I have somehow missed it?!???). Sorry, back on topic.
I believe I have enjoyed a film version, the original written version, an audiobook, and now this historic audiobook/radio playhouse version of this compact but powerful little tale of redemption. Orson Welles and Lionel Barrymore lend their considerable weight as both producer and performer to this narrated & scripted rendition; thus, preserving the original text while telling the timeless ghost story in radio drama format. Something tells me, this will be an annual tradition for as many years as I am able to access it. Do enjoy.
