Historia
For 113 terrifying days in 1940, Nazi Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe, threw everything it had at Great Britain in hopes of early victory in World War II. The task of defending southern England from airborne attack fell to pilots in the Royal Air Force, supplemented in their darkest hour by more than 100 flyers from Canada. These Canadians, some from famous families, some straight off the farm, served in forty-seven different Battle of Britain squadrons.

Historia
In the late 1990s, Patrick O’Brian’s beloved, massively bestselling historical novel series was destined for film. With director Peter Weir and stars Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany signed on for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, there was only one problem: The Rose, the replica eighteenth-century warship that filmmakers bought for the production, was in Newport, Rhode Island, two oceans and thousands of miles away from Hollywood. Enter a ragtag crew of thirty oddballs and tall-ship fanatics, including author Will Sofrin.

wonderful read/listen
Revisado: 03-03-24
A superbly written account of a wonderful adventure—SO happy that Will Sofrin took the time and efffort to write the book. As a lifelong smallboat sailor and lifelong student of tall ships (and dabbler at tall ship guest crewing), I found the book a much-needed “renewal gift” right now. (I say much-needed since too many of today’s youngsters lose sight of invaluable history [and themselves] in the digital world.) I loved the audio version, especially the interview at the end. One minor criticism is this. The narrator, a lubber for sure, did a fine job overall but really should’ve read “bowsprit” more carefully—and Audible maybe should take a lesson from that ongoing annoying mistake: have every author spend an hour and make a list of the pronunciations of unfamiliar terms from his/her book so the poor uninitiated narrator isn’t just taking his/her best guess. Overall, though, WHAT a great story. Thanks for a great read/listen!

Historia
Wilbur and Orville Wright are two of the greatest innovators in history, and together they solved the centuries-old riddle of powered, heavier-than-air flight. Glenn Hammond Curtiss was the most talented machinist of his day; he first became the fastest man alive when he perfected the motorcycle, then turned his eyes toward the skies to become the fastest man aloft. But between the Wrights and Curtiss bloomed a poisonous rivalry and a patent war so powerful that it shaped aviation in its early years and drove one of the three men to his grave.

fascinating behind-the-scenes account
Revisado: 06-27-20
This is a very well-written (and in audio version well-read) account of the life of an air traffic controller whose career spanned key decades.
Since it paints a disturbing picture up through 2008, I’m glad I flew as a passenger in that period without incident—surely a tribute to superb work by controllers in difficult conditions. I’m curious to read an updated account.
The book is quite profane, even crude, in its language—but it is real-life language and I was fine with it, indeed it’s pretty amusing if you’re not a snowflake. And it was in no way offensive to any group or gender, just to people doing stupid things.

Historia
Somewhere deep beneath the wild seas of the southern Indian Ocean, perhaps in the eerie underwater canyons of Broken Ridge along the Seventh Arc satellite band, lies the answer to the world's greatest aviation mystery. Why, on the night of 8 March 2014, did Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 suddenly U-turn, zig-zag up the Straits of Malacca, then vanish with 239 souls on board? Was it an elaborate murder-suicide by a rogue pilot? A terrible accident such as onboard fire, rapid decompression or systems failure? A terrorist hijacking gone wrong? Or something else entirely?

Fascinating story, superbly written.
Revisado: 05-21-20
Excellent work. The disappearance is only part of the bizarre story. The startling behavior of the ATSB and Malaysian investigation is the other part. Makes me earnestly wish someone would mount the searched based on the piloted ditching theory. So much evidence that the pilot planned and pulled it off (ignored by the ATSB)...

Getting a pilot's license was the furthest thing from her mind - until an ex-RAF instructor suggested that she wasn't competent to do so. The thing is, he could be right. Sylvia has just a few weeks to prove that she can fly as well as any man. You Fly Like a Woman tells the story of one woman's search for confidence as she stumbles into a man's world.

Historia
On July 25, 2000, a Concorde, the world's fastest passenger plane, was taking off from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris when it suddenly burst into flames. An airliner capable of flying at more than twice the speed of sound, the Concorde had completed 25 years of successful flights, whisking wealthy passengers - from diplomats to rock stars to corporate titans - between continents on brief and glamorous flights. Yet on this fateful day, the chartered Concorde jet, en route to America, crashed and killed all 109 passengers and crew onboard and four people on the ground.

Excellent telling of a hugely important struggle
Revisado: 02-03-19
I have studied the Battle since childhood. It has so many fascinating aspects, human as well as organizational and technological. Yet this massively important moment in the history of Western Civilization is virtually unknown to the general public in the US—which is a disgraceful failing of US education. (But of course Western Civilization and all the staggering good it has delivered humankind is now not only out of fashion, but actually denigrated by pseudo-sophisticates.) Mr. Holland has done a superb job writing this book and it is very well narrated! Bravo!
