Gibson's storytelling is vivid and imaginative, painting a richly detailed alien world, well-choreographed action, and intrigue. Some of the setting is difficult to follow--while many aspects of culture and society are explained straight-up to the reader, some of the bigger aspects are not. I suspect that's because they are so ingrained into the society that they shouldn't be commented upon, though I'd really have preferred it was imparted to the reader somehow since they seem quite important to understanding the hero's motives. Overall, "Griffin Ranger" is a thrilling adventure that will appeal to fans of griffins and anyone looking for a compelling story.

Not a lot of murder mysteries focus so much on the characters as more than props, but Reaper's Lottery makes it more than just a puzzle for the reader to solve, it really lets you know and care about the characters, too.

So this is my favorite of Gre7g's books. I can always tell when one of his books grabs me because I get very frustrated and then can't stop thinking about it. It is absolutely heart-wrenching and a page-turner, and a well-earned payoff.

On that point, Warning: the protagonist absolutely earns his ending in this book. Nothing is gonna come easy. (except maybe Saquel, badum tsh)

Piers does an excellent job reading as usual, he even nails the sourang names which I wasnt sure would work when spoken but totally does.

This books works differently than the one preceding it and the one following it. It digs deeply into a new and unfamiliar situation the geroo find themselves in, and lingers there. The only goal any of them has is survival--and as such, Kanti takes a back seat for most of this story. Because it's not about him, it's about a village that starts as a collection of strangers slowly learning to live with each other.

Well... until they don't anymore.

Piers is still the best, by the way. He delivers all the voices with conviction, attitude and distinct personalities.

I think it would have flowed a bit better if it was broken into parts on top of the chapters, since they tend to flow into one another without regard for the passage of time. This story is episodic, and the primary episodes are, firstly, their departure and arrival on Krakuntec, secondly, the life of Dekka, and thirdly, Saquel building his security force. (also there's the fourth one but that's just the last two chapters and leads into book 3) But this is a minor nitpick about the structuring of the story that only occurred to me when I listened to it all the way through. Regardless of this, you NEED to read this book if you want to really grasp the depths of where this story plunges in book 3... which should be out *checks fictional watch* any day now~

I may be a bit biased but I like listening to Ryman's performance bring the story to life. Kanti is a very down-to-earth protagonist; he's not stupid, but he is caught in the middle of a lie he can't simply resolve by confessing to the right person. Already this makes it leagues better than stories where you're constantly yelling at the character "just tell the truth already!" You know why he can't. That's very critical to building sympathy.

This book was originally a standalone title but then Gre7g did the foolish thing of making not just one but many more sequels, meaning there is just SO MUCH geroo to invest your time in.
