Ronan is a very intelligent, articulate, thoughtful person with a lot of heart, who tries to do the right thing, correctly - always with the aim of helping people. If you are interested in understanding human behavior, and becoming a better person yourself, this should be of interest; after all, "the only person you should try to be better than, is the person you were yesterday".

Sexual assaults too numerous to count in the first chapter alone. No appealing characters. The writing is average at best, the monotone narration dry as cardboard. And it doesn't appear you can return the title to get your money/credit back.

Interesting story, average script, OK performances (when can we finally leave behind whimpering, sobbing female characters?). What's bizarre is that it seems to be patting itself on the back for exposing misogyny, without actually crediting the weight of its devastation, or really exploring it; the rape of a 10-year-old female is an offhand comment tossed off as barely a ripple of water under the bridge. Controlling/manipulative/gaslighting male behavior is depicted, but not deconstructed (essential to understanding and preventing it, which should be the goal)

Depressingly still relevant; these concepts should be well-understood by all humans, should’ve been dismantled eons ago, should’nt have existed in the first place. Instead the toxic idea that women exist to serve & be controlled by men, and do not deserve the same level of respect as men (or any respect at all) still reigns in most minds - including the majority of women .

Men are not born violent

Society beats tenderness, empathy, understanding, and the right to human emotions out of male humans, and violence into them. Our culture creates misogyny by setting expectations of male superiority: men are supposed to be bigger, stronger, smarter, funnier, more skillful, more successful…in short, better than women at everything. This creates the feeling that if any female is superior in any way, it threatens the very essence of what it is to be a man, and is therefore intolerable. Add to that the ingrained fallacy that women exist to serve men, should be controlled by men, and do not deserve the same level of respect as men (or any in the minds of many) - and you have a system in which men are taught to believe it’s the duty of women to prioritize the well-being of men above all else (without reciprocity). Thus males can feel fully justified in blaming women if there needs are not being met, justified in hating women for that, and that women deserve to have that hatred taken out on them in horrific, violent, and inhuman ways.

The concepts in this book should be well understood by all humans, should have been dismantled ages ago, should never have existed in the first place. But sadly, we’ve all been steeped in the toxic idea that women exist to serve men, should be controlled by men, and do not deserve the same level of respect as men, or any respect whatsoever in the minds of many - including the majority of women. Women are taught from the cradle that it is their duty to please men in every way (from behavior to appearance), to diminish themselves/their accomplishments, so as to never challenge the supposed superiority of men. Women are expected to be grateful for the attention & approval of men, to seek it above all else, to compete with other women for it (divide and conquer). The patriarchy would like women’s attention to be completely claimed by this horseshite, to remain distracted and discouraged from banding together, supporting each other, reaching our fullest potential, and creating amazing things in the world. Take a very long, deep look at whether you are perpetuating this - in your own life, and/or the lives of others.

The lyricism of Obreht’s writing (lush descriptions, some interesting characterizations) is the reason to read/listen to this book. Fans of magical realism will enjoy it most, others may find that aspect meaningless, even boring. There is no solid central narrative, as things jump around in time, and from present to backstory, which can be annoying/confusing. Regardless, there should be enough in the writing talent to interest any fan of literature.

The interwoven lives of these well-drawn characters interacting in their teen years, and then again in their 30s holds interest. It needs more editing, the pacing could’ve been tighter. Some may feel underwhelmed by the ending, but the crimes depicted are more realistic than many stories that go over the top for dramatic punch.

4 1/2 stars. The reading starts with a narrator whose cadences and accent are perfect for the subject matter and excellent prose. Unfortunately, when the female voice starts, it’s as if a high-pitched clanging started; without inflection, the words are simply clipped off the page without storytelling or southern accent ability. Nevertheless, Obreht is an excellent writer, and her sweeping tale captures the atmosphere of her chosen era/location. It doesn’t have a sharp story arc, or a lot of plot; this is more for those who enjoy meandering through well-evoked times/places/circumstances they’ve not experienced in their own lives.
