While the cell is sparse and cold, at least this one has a bed. The figure resting there is too thin; too still, the prominent bones the result of long starvation, the stillness the product of too much anguish and abuse. He watches, though. An anxious, intelligent mind still occupies this frail and failing body, one that watches and wonders about the new guard occupying his cell each night.

Stellar.
Revisado: 09-12-20
Already among my favorite authors, Martinez exceeds my admittedly high exoectations in this work. Story, characterization, and world-building here are all above and beyond the ordinary. With excellent narration bringing the best to light, I highly recommend this brief but significant tale.

A rare and true treasure. The author has woven a tapestry from two strands of story. The narration is flawless. I highly recommend this book, but not for casual listening. Be involved.

Names and faces he thought he'd left behind in Liverpool resurface in London, bringing Felix far more trouble than he'd anticipated. Childhood memories, family traumas, sins old and new, and a council estate that was meant to be a modern utopia until it turned into something like hell.... These are just some of the sticks life uses to beat Felix Castor with, as things go from bad to worse for London's favorite freelance exorcist. See, Castor's stepped over the line this time, and he knows he'll have to pay. The only question is: How much?

Historia
In 2204, humanity is expanding into the wider galaxy in leaps and bounds. Cutting-edge technology of linked jump gates has rendered most forms of transportation - including starships - virtually obsolete. Every place on Earth, every distant planet humankind has settled, is now a step away from any other. And all seems wonderful - until a crashed alien spaceship of unknown origin is found on a newly located world 89 light-years from Earth, carrying a cargo as strange as it is horrifying. To assess the potential of the threat a high-powered team is dispatched to investigate. But one of them may not be all they seem....

Good book by a sometimes great author.
Revisado: 06-07-20
I enjoyed the book, especially in those active or more emotional sections where the science-potentials come alive. I did find my mind wandering at times, which was never the case with some other works by this author. The ending is a logical stopping point, I think, rather than an ending--which is okay. The narrstion was brilliant at times, a bit sleepy at others. I recommend it for true sci-fi fans.

Fabulous in every way.
Revisado: 05-07-19
Fabulous. A great story, an amazing world, wonderful characters. The ship mistress is one of the most real, relatable characters I've read. Heart-rending developments in places, but needed in order to bring about the strong firward-looking ending. I recommend this to lovers of quality fiction. And the narration? Absolutely perfectly delivered in a strong, effective female voice.

Historia
A century from now, thanks to a technology allowing instantaneous travel across light-years, humanity has solved its energy shortages, cleaned up the environment, and created far-flung colony worlds. The keys to this empire belong to the powerful North family - composed of successive generations of clones. Yet these clones are not identical. For one thing, genetic errors have crept in with each generation. For another, the original three clone "brothers" have gone their separate ways, and the branches of the family are now friendly rivals more than allies. Or maybe not so friendly....

Fabulous complexity
Revisado: 05-01-19
This is an enormous story. Hamilton weaves a complex tapestry from threads that seem at first too diverse to belong together. Although at times the detail slows the story down a bit, a small application of patience provides a payoff, because there's always a reason the author took the reader down that road. Hamilton has developed ideas about the possible futures of today's science and technology, and created from them a credible, cohesive future reality that includes a burgeoning intetstellar human society. He's taken character types and story tropes pleasingly familiar to readers, like detectives, wives, husbands, playboys, doctors, moguls, revolutionaries, zealots, and overachievers, and placed them in a world simultaneously strange and familiar. Through it all, the characters remain human. Despite tech that provides enhanced perception, their lives--filled with fears, needs, joys, and love--are our lives, only (as they shoukd be in great fiction) larger than life.

Revisado: 04-09-19
I would rarely review a book I didn't finish. Not my cup of tea? Fine. Usually not a basis for review. But when a book is touted as epic fantasy and the first hour or more is a thinly disguised pseudo-Christian catechism, I think it's only fair to let people know. It's possible that if I kept listening the story would evolve, but if so the author made a poor choice with the opening. The narrator had a lovely delivery. That's not enough to make me listen to more.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.
