Historia
In his 26 years in the field, Richard Taylor has worked on well over a hundred murder cases, with victims and perpetrators from all walks of life. In this fascinating memoir, Taylor draws on some of the most tragic, horrific and illuminating of these cases - as well as dark secrets from his own family's past - to explore some of the questions he grapples with every day: why do people kill? Does committing a monstrous act make someone a monster? Could any of us, in the wrong circumstances, become a killer?

Excellent read but narration could be better
Revisado: 01-31-25
Dr Taylor wrote a fabulous book, and although he has a lovely, sonorous voice, his delivery is mostly monotone. If this could be re-recorded with a professional voice actor, it would be perfect.

Historia
Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Language is a lava lamp
Revisado: 06-28-16
Gotta love a professor who makes analogies like that. He is also not afraid to admit what I have suspected for years--no one, not even an accomplished linguist, can understand Shakespeare. If you feel lost, you are in good company.
Professor McWhorter takes a potentially dry as dust subject and turns it into an accessible and entertaining series of lectures that shed light on how we got here from there.
His speech and delivery are excellent, as one might hope.
I highly recommend this course to any word nerd or student of human history.

Historia
Part biography, part cultural history, The Creation of Anne Boleyn is a fascinating reconstruction of Anne’s life and an illuminating look at her afterlife in the popular imagination. Why is Anne so compelling? Why has she inspired such extreme reactions? What did she really look like? Was she the flaxen-haired martyr of Romantic paintings or the raven-haired seductress of twenty-first-century portrayals? (Answer: Neither.) And perhaps the most provocative questions concern Anne’s death more than her life.

If you like the show "The Tudors", you will love this book
Revisado: 06-24-16
I had been hoping for a more or less historically accurate literary portrait of Anne Boleyn. Instead, I have what is essentially a play-by-play analysis of the show, "The Tudors". I have no desire to see that show, and certainly not after Ms Bordo's analysis of the historical flaws of it. This is essentially pop culture fluff interspersed with occasional facts drawn from history.
Additionally, Ms Rosenblat, the narrator, enunciates well and modulates her speech so as to heighten the drama where needed. To my ears, however, she sounds like a very heavy chain smoker, and her voice is similar to that of Harvey Fierstein. I keep expecting her to jump out of the narrative and into a big ole drag queen production. Her voice is quite distracting to me, and grates on my nerves if I listen too long.
If you don't mind listening to a chain smoker recite a play-by-play analysis of a mostly fictional show, you will love this book. For anyone looking for a reasonably correct historical analysis, just keep moving on.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

Indeed I shall renounce the superfluous use of the word "indeed"
Revisado: 06-16-16
That is actually my only criticism of this course, and even then it's only mildly annoying and affects only portions of the story. Professor Armstrong has a great delivery. She enunciates clearly, has a good cadence, and weaves a masterful tale of intrigue, history, and science. She skillfully draws connections between events in the 14th century and traces their evolution up to modern times. She makes compelling arguments to support her connections, and she does so in a manner that is both scholarly and entertaining. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is interested in science, sociology, religion, economics, or, of course, history.

Magnificent
Revisado: 05-05-15
As if the story itself were not compelling enough, Branagh's performance draws one in and makes one feel a part of the story itself. Truly magnificent.
