Neil Clarke has selected the short science fiction (and only science fiction) best representing the previous year's writing, showcasing the talent, variety, and awesome "sensawunda" that the genre has to offer.

Deffenantly not the best
Revisado: 10-19-21
There were not enough good stories in this collection. A few good ones, but not many. The narrators are lack luster at best and gratting at worst, especially the female narrator. Don't waste your credit on this.

Historia
Richard Muller was an honorable diplomat who braved unimaginable dangers to make contact with the first-known race of intelligent aliens. But those aliens left a mark on him: a psychic wound that emanates a telepathic miasma that his fellow humans can neither cure nor endure. Muller is exiled to the remote planet of Lemnos, where he is left, deeply embittered, at the heart of a deadly maze - until a new alien race appears, seemingly intent on exterminating humanity.

Solid classic sci-fi
Revisado: 10-15-20
I love classic sci-fi and especially Robert Silverberg. It's a good book, not the best thing in the world, but it's short, has a decent plot, and has some interesting philosophy to think about, what else do you want?

Would you believe it took nearly 500 years to translate the ESV (English Standard Version) Bible? That's because the ESV builds on the great translations of the past - including William Tyndale's New Testament of 1526 and the King James Version (KJV) of 1611. But the ESV Bible also builds on the best Christian scholarship of the last 100 years.

Good product, bad presentation
Revisado: 10-02-20
The performance is fantastic, I really enjoyed it, but the way the books are presented is a mess.
Audible has this problem of taking works made up several books/stories, that aren't audible originals, and just labeling them chapter 1, chapter 2, ect. Each chapter of the Bible gets a file, but it simply gets numbered instead of listing the name of the book and the chapter.
As a lover of audio books, I find this disrespectful to me, and as a Christian I find this disrespectful of God's word.
Get your crap together audible.

Historia
Fortune hunter Billy Newman is not a man of great strength or physical courage. Like a young Johnny Depp, he gets by on his wit, wiles and good looks. And he’s had quite a good run—striking gold in the Philippines and buying his very own island in the South Seas. . . . But there’s trouble in paradise, and Billy’s in the thick of it. The island’s crops are failing. The island’s people are dying. And the island’s owner—Billy—is taking the heat. Why? Because he’s angered the 75-foot-tall big-boss god of the island.

Tuck Underbank is a Warrow -- think a hobbit with shoes and "large jewel-like eyes" -- living in the peaceful Boskydells. When an unnaturally cold winter strikes and the evil Modru threatens the world, he and a number of his fellow Thornwalkers go to the High King's aid. But a vast expanse of lightless blizzard called the Dimmendark (sounds bad, doesn't it?) is spreading over the land, and Tuck soon finds that the "dark tide" is going to swamp them all.

knock off Tolkien, but that's fine
Revisado: 08-26-20
Is this a telling of the same old story? Yes. Is it very much like Tolkien? Yes. But that's why it's great.
Tolkien is hard to get through with all the descriptions amd family histories. This cuts that out.
Simply a cosy fantasy

Historia
Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

An interesting look at bourbon
Revisado: 07-02-20
If you like whiskey or any other distilled spirits then this is a good listen. If you like American history then this is also a good listen.
The quality of the production itself is not what I would want for all audio books, but it's tolerable to listen to, especially since it's only a few hours long.

Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

Nice pallet cleanser
Revisado: 05-12-20
I had just finished the Mistborn trilogy and wanted something short and not too heavy, this was perfect for that. It's a fun romp on fantasy tropes and rpgs. If you're looking for something epic then this isn't it, but if you just want a break from heavier stuff then this should be just fine.

story titles would be nice
Revisado: 03-20-20
So far I've enjoyed the stories in this collection. My only two nit picks are that the narrator reads things in a weird way sometimes and there are no story titles for each section, it's just chapter 1, chapter 2, ect.
So if you like short horror fiction then this is a good choice.
