Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job. Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job isn't like the others. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes—especially after what happened last time.

Mild twists and unsuccessful turns
Revisado: 04-20-24
it was okay. I did find that I had to force myself to return to listening for the first half of the book. eventually there were some mildly interesting events. The final twists were predictable and a bit unsatisfactory. but the biggest failing here was in the characterization. there was not a single engaging person in the book. they all read like Harlequin romance characters who'd strayed a little from the straight and narrow. I managed to listen to the end so this definitely wasn't the worst thing I've purchased on Audible but I can't recommend it to anyone with a reading level above 7th grade.

Historia
In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three. A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time. A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory. And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible. An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

The story redeemed itself at the end
Revisado: 05-31-22
My first reaction to this story was disappointment because it wasn't what I was expecting. Then came genuine interest, because it was fairly decent storytelling. then the big twist. that is when the disappointment returned tenfold. the big twist appeared to be the end of the story, and I was rolling my eyes and sighing with exasperation. but then... the story didn't end. and in the last several chapters, the entire thing was redeemed. the final twist made it all worthwhile.

Historia
Samantha Heather Mackey couldn't be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England's Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort—a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other "Bunny", and seem to move and speak as one. But everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies' fabled "Smut Salon"....

Louise has had to watch her husband, Andrew, start a new family in the four years since he left her. The ‘other woman’ is now his wife - but Louise isn’t ready to let Caz enjoy the life that was once hers or to let go of the man she still loves. As Louise starts to dig into Caz’s past, the two women’s pretence of civility starts to slip. But in trying to undermine each other, they discover more about the man they both married. And when Andrew is murdered at a family party, both women are found standing over the body. It’s always the wife. But which one?

Prepare yourself for a transformative experience. Sometimes, life's setbacks contain hidden gifts. Here at Lakewood, you'll find the space to unwrap them. A weekend at the Lakewood Retreat is exactly what Chloe Powell needs. Freshly unemployed after her boss loses a reelection campaign, the former press secretary desperately wants a break from the bustle of Washington DC. What a bunch of drivel!
Revisado: 08-01-20
if this hadn't been ultra-short, I would never have finished it. Terrible story, witless characters, improbable plot, and a whiny narrator just to finish it off. An utter waste of time.

A steaming pile of hot mess
Revisado: 08-05-18
I don't usually write bad reviews, because authors are people too, and I don't want to hurt their feelings. But this sorry excuse for a novel was the hottest of hot messes, a steaming pile of hot mess.
The writing was about on par with your average Harlequin Romance, except most Harlequin Romances have a believable love story. The love story in this particular book was beyond ridiculous, and somehow used as the rationale for exploring another universe? What? And even Harlequin writers don't use words like "tresses" as much as this joker did. Really? Tresses? Is it 1932?
And why the author decided to take on a science fiction plot, I will never understand, as she demonstrated absolutely no knowledge of real science. And the science she did use was just thrown out there without any kind of layman's explanation. "Just go with it. Sure. A laser and a mirror will open a portal to another universe. Trust me."
I'm not sure why I listened to all the way through to the end, except maybe I was hoping it would get better. It did not. What a shitshow.

Historia
Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant—and it does.

Strong start, weak ending

I was genuinely enjoying this story, thinking it might be the next big suspense novel. Unfortunateky, the ending was a big disappointment.

Historia
Looking to escape the notoriety caused by the part she played in taking down Polar Bear's crime ring, seventeen-year-old Lumikki Andersson escapes to Prague, where she hopes to find a few weeks of peace among the hordes of tourists. But not long after arriving, she's cornered by a skittish and strange young woman who claims to be her long-lost sister. The woman, Lenka, is obviously terrified, and even though Lumikki doesn't believe her story--although parts of it ring true--she can't just walk away.

Not as good as the first
Revisado: 09-06-15
I absolutely loved the first book in the series. I've been waiting anxiously for the second. Unfortunately, this book failed to live up to its predecessor. moving the action to Prague eliminated all the familiar characters. the brevity of the story made it impossible to form any emotional connections with the new characters. The whole thing felt rushed and unfamiliar, not at all like a second installment to the first.
