Atrocious british accent
Revisado: 11-27-16
The story is good, as is the narrator. That is until he attempts the accent of one of the main characters who is British. I could not finish the book.

Historia
It is 1978, and John Lennon has escaped New York City to try to find the island off the west coast of Ireland he bought nine years prior. Leaving behind domesticity, his approaching 40s, his inability to create, and his memories of his parents, he sets off to find calm in the comfortable silence of isolation. But when he puts himself in the hands of a shape-shifting driver full of Irish charm and dark whimsy, what ensues can only be termed a magical mystery tour.

I just couldn't get into the narrative. Perhaps , I was missing out on the John Lennon experience.
The reader, however, was excellent.

The worst narration imaginable
Revisado: 11-19-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A different narrator could have made the difference.
Would you ever listen to anything by Peter Aspe and Brian Doyle (translator) again?
Actually, I came to Peter Aspe through a Kindle purchase and enjoyed the book sufficiently to make this Audible purchase. In the future, Peter Apse on Kindle could be a possibility but not on Audible.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The accents the narrator affects are so bad as to make the characters almost unintelligible. I have had great difficulty following the plot.
I have been listening to books from Audible from its very early days. This book suffers from the worst narration I have ever experienced in all these years.
I could not finish listening to this book.

Revisado: 03-03-14
I grew up with the Beatles and still remember the first time I heard them on the redo.
Mark Lewisohn has written a truly outstanding biography which was narrated flawlessly by Clive Mantle.
I have been with Audible from their beginning and this might just be the best read/listen that I have had. This very long book is all to short!
I particularly enjoyed what the author had to say about Ringo whose significance to the Beatles I had not previously understood.

Historia
A fresh look at the endlessly fascinating Tudors - the dramatic and overlooked story of Henry VII and his founding of the Tudor Dynasty - filled with spies, plots, counter-plots, and an uneasy royal succession to Henry VIII. Near the turn of the sixteenth century, England had been ravaged for decades by conspiracy and civil war. Henry Tudor clambered to the top of the heap, a fugitive with a flimsy claim to England’s crown who managed to win the throne and stay on it for 24 years.

Revisado: 07-26-12
Everyone has heard and read about Henry VIII. But his father, Henry VII???
I certainly knew very little before listening to this book but know much more now. Thomas Penn's magnificently written biography is a magnificent, interesting all encompassing read. Simon Vance, once again, is an outstanding narrator.
This is a must if history interests you.

Historia
His memory is blank. He only knows that he was flushed out of the Mediterranean Sea, his body riddled with bullets. There are a few clues. A frame of microfilm surgically implanted beneath the flesh of his hip. Evidence that plastic surgery has altered his face. Strange things that he says in his delirium -- maybe code words. Initials: "J.B." And a number on the film negative that leads to a Swiss bank account, a fortune of four million dollars, and, at last, a name: Jason Bourne.

A Wonderfully Nuanced Book
Revisado: 05-17-12
I think that Hilary Mantel is an wonderful author. Her story telling; her use of language; her ability to bring to life a far away period of time weaves a literary spell. I wish the book had been twice as long!!
Now I need to wait for her to write/complete the final book in this triology.
The England of Hilary Mantel is totalitarian state. Simon Vance, one of my favorite readers, reads this book beautifully but, all the same, his voice lacks the necessary malevolence that the narrator of Wolf Hall was able to achieve.
I hope that Audible will soon bring Hilary Mantel's other books into their library.

Historia
Two young women are found murdered in Oslo, both drowned in their own blood. Media coverage quickly reaches fever pitch: Could this be the work of a serial killer? The crime scenes offer no coherent clues, the police investigation is stalled, and the one man who might be able to help doesn't want to be found. Traumatized by his last case, Inspector Harry Hole has lost himself in the squalor of Hong Kong's opium dens. Yet when he is compelled, at last, to return to Norway - his father is dying - Harry's buried instincts begin to take over. Then a female MP is discovered brutally murdered.
