Historia
It was supposed to be the highlight of her career, the pinnacle for which she’d worked all her life. And as Hattie McDaniel took the stage in 1940 to claim an honor that would make her the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award, she tearfully took her place in history. Between personal triumphs and tragedies, heartbreaking losses, and severe setbacks, this historic night of winning best supporting actress for her role as the sassy Mammy in the controversial movie Gone With the Wind was going to be life-changing. Or so she thought.

Loved this story into the life of Hattie!
Revisado: 04-20-25
I learned so much about a woman who fought so hard to be seen by so many. I loved the way the narrator brought the story to life. I almost passed this book up but so glad I didn’t! It was a story I needed to hear.

Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

Historia
When Kitty Karr Tate, a White icon of the silver screen, dies and bequeaths her multimillion-dollar estate to the St. John sisters, three young, wealthy Black women, it prompts questions. Lots of questions. A celebrity in her own right, Elise St. John would rather focus on sorting out Kitty’s affairs than deal with the press. But what she discovers in one of Kitty’s journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty.

I loved the story despite not loving the narrators!
Revisado: 11-28-24
I loved this story and it is my favorite fiction I’ve read this year. I know this is not as fiction as we think. As a family historian, I have my own connection to people who had to make hard decisions for their time in this country. I may read the hard cover too but I highly recommend adding this to your reading list! Loved Hazel and Kitty journeys and would love to read a spin off of the lives of others. My only complaint besides not loving the narrator for Elise is there are so many women characters and it is hard to keep up with who is who in 2017 and pre-1965. I had to re listen to a chapter or two and write down the names that flow through the novel! Overall, I LOVED it!

Historia
Soledad Barnes has her life all planned out. Because, of course, she does. She plans everything. She designs everything. She fixes everything. She’s a domestic goddess who's never met a party she couldn't host or a charge she couldn't lead. The one with all the answers and the perfect vinaigrette for that summer salad. But none of her varied talents can save her when catastrophe strikes, and the life she built with the man who was supposed to be her forever, goes poof in a cloud of betrayal and disillusion.

Loved this journey! The only thing I would change is having the same male voice as the first book is a little confusing but overall, this is another lovely story!

Historia
They say the love of money is the root of all evil, but for Ken Swift, it's the love of a woman. Ken is 21, hurting people for cash to try to pay his way through college, when he lays eyes on Jimi Lee, the woman who will change the course of his entire life. What's meant to be a one-night stand with the Harvard-bound beauty turns into an explosion of sexual chemistry that neither can quit. And when Jimi Lee becomes pregnant, their two very different worlds collide in ways they never could have anticipated.

The only thing I would change is having a male and female narrator versus just one voice. I miss EJD.

A good read. A journey of a relationship through pain and later understanding. Smiles, laughter and tears as it reminds me of my own journey back to love.
