I've very much enjoyed the author's other stores but this one fell flat for me. very binary, black and white, The good folx perfect, the bad folx evil with no redemptive aspects. Such an interesting group of characters yet no character development. Too overly simplified for even a YA audience, Seems to me it would be better to teach vs preach. Haven't we been preached at enough? And yeah the narration is a bit over the top but I felt he was matching the vibe of the book. I can't recommend this in good conscience.

I got thru 44 hrs but just had to stop

If getting a 67hr book for one credit drives your decision to get this, you'll learn an important lesson--quality not quantity. No one can say I didn't give it a strong try. This series needs significant and brutal editing. Way too long, way too much time on details of characters who don't matter. I'm sure the author is talented but this flaw makes it read amateurish as others have mentioned. Also my attention span is negligible these days so writing has to be mentally engaging. My time is worth more than any amount of credits.

is this meant for teens or adults?

I'm enjoying this series but this book... I mean Will murders people with hardly a thought yet they're so prudish when it comes to sexually it reads like a tween novel, but we all know that teenagers in the real world are having actual sex. Yet these 20 something characters act like blushing brides, particularly the men. This prudishness doesn't add to the story but rather cheapens it. Author, please portray real adult sexual drive and emotions or just skip it. Puritans live more interesting lives than what's portrayed here and it's disappointing and distracting. I found myself skipping "pages" of dialogue about love interests worried about inadvertently brushing hands. 🙄

This one is showing it's age. also Dorin is definitely not a character I would envision myself as. it's a monk-like existence without the advantage of not having to deal with the world. i didn't care for the book, really.

interesting characters, great story, unique situation, surprising denouement. not bogged down by typical story lines of romance, quests, etc.

if you want characters who are constantly stunned speechless then read this. if you want the same character reactions repeated over and over then read this. if you want a story with completely implausible events with cliches everywhere then enjoy. because I'm not. the first book was ooookkaayyy not great. this is painful. 1) fire the editor. 2) have the writer spends a month contact with only one other person. then maybe they'll explore the real mental challenge of living knowing you're the last two people on earth. or transport yourself back to the 70s where story lines this straight forward and under developed will fly. yeah, I didn't like this book. I do not recommend. too many other good ones out there.

I'm stopping halfway through. I give. endless detail, flat characters, main protagonist that never actually has a true struggle, after 7 books. RPG player here but I guess LitRPG is not for me. it's just tedious.

I've grown beyond this style of writing

for as much as the intro talked about free to pursue his writing without editors, I would say Goodkind very much needed a good editor. I ended up listening at 1.3x speed because of the incredibly repetitive language, overactive detail and the slow reading pace. I figured out the story almost immediately and frankly only finished it to see if I was right. perhaps if you need a fantasy or like the old school writing style you would like this book, but the genre is progressed beyond this, or at least my tastes have.
