Not quite charming and sweet
Revisado: 11-20-23
The story is likeable enough and funny. There were a few times I questioned the rationality of some characters, but I enjoyed it. However, I chose the book because it had been described as charming and sweet. I don’t consider dropping the f-bomb charming or sweet, so that caught me off guard. It wasn’t a lot, but as the book wound down, it happened more often. So if that is something that bothers you or if you also don’t include that in “charming and sweet,” be aware of that.

Historia
As the London Daily Gazette’s popular gossip columnist, she is extremely adept at sneaking into houses, assuming disguises and overseeing a vast network of spies to ensure she stays abreast of the beau monde’s comings and goings. If it sometimes seems as though she was hiding behind the settee during a particularly fierce quarrel between a husband and his wife, it’s most likely because she was hiding behind the settee during their fierce quarrel.

A bit convoluted
Revisado: 10-04-23
I’ve really enjoyed her other series, so I was interested in a new series that intertwined with that one. However, this one just doesn’t quite live up to her first series. It’s a good story, and the characters are likable, but I find Beatrice as a lead more appealing than Verity. Also, the plot was a LOT more convoluted. It was hard to keep track of everyone, and if you haven’t listened to the other series—good luck! A new series should not start out that way, relying so heavily on the one it is spinning off from. I had skipped the story where Flora took the lead in the Beatrice mysteries because of reviews, but I had to go back and listen to it so that I could follow this one. But overall I liked it enough that I’m going to give book 2 a try.

I wasn’t thrilled with the narration. Most of the women sounded the same. That ending, though!!!! I knew I didn’t trust that person, but I didn’t expect that. It’s a good thing I’m behind and the next book is available.

You know where it’s going, and yet . . . you’re still drawn in
Revisado: 05-21-23
First, let me respond to the comments about it rambling on. Yes, it does. That’s the nature of literature in the time period it was written. So if that is something that bothers you, this book is not for you. I knew that going in, so I was prepared for it. (And still I found it a bit too much at times.) That being said, the book captured my interest. Even though I foresaw most of the twists, I was still drawn in. The book is odd in that the “secret” is obvious to the reader. What’s not obvious is how it will all come out and turn out. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Amazing!!!
Revisado: 05-01-23
My only criticism is that the narration could have been better, but it wasn’t bad enough to distract me. The story was amazing and kept me engaged the entire book. It’
s interesting, intelligent, and emotional. It’s complicated with many points of view, jumps around in time, and has a few plot lines going, but I was never lost. In fact, I couldn’t wait until I could continue listening. I’ll admit, the folklore and Victorian literature aspects are right up my alley as well, so that appealed to me. But I just loved this book and would definitely recommend it.

Not so much cozy mysteries as barely there mysteries
Revisado: 04-26-23
I had 3 of the 4 “mysteries” figured out right away. The main character is annoying. She’s a baker who “bakes” in designer high-healed shoes, but it doesn’t matter because she barely bakes, doesn’t come in to the bakery until it’s time to open the bakery, and then is off solving mysteries. She’s constantly jumping to conclusions, especially in relationships, and she’s very whiny and immature. After one date with a guy, she sees him talking to another woman and decides he’s a cheater, thus she can’t go to the police with information about a killer. For three books we hear about how she can eat anything she wants and not gain wait, and suddenly in the fourth book she’s gaining weight and worried about dieting. The there is the policeman who come across a crime scene with an unconscious victim, and he doesn’t call it in or call for medical help but lets the concussed victim spend the night on her own. I found myself constantly rolling my eyes.

Revisado: 11-23-22
Melodramatic characters and situations that had me rolling my eyes combined with an author who does NOT know the regency era (SO MANY mistakes) made for ridiculous stories. Two stars instead of one because the basic premises of the stories have potential; they just weren’t executed well. But if you don’t care about the Regency Era accuracy mistakes or the melodrama and want quick, clean romance stories, you’ll probably enjoy them.

Just okay
Revisado: 07-01-21
This wasn’t my favorite of Julie Klassen’s books, and the narration didn’t help it any. The voices for the young girls sounded middle-aged, and the timing of the reading was off. I don’t know if it was the narrator or the editor, but the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next sounded like they were in the same breath. It made listening to the book very jarring. As for the story, it felt drawn out. It didn’t hold my attention like other books she’s written.

Historia
Raina Bretton is a rag woman in London's East End when a handsome stranger appears in a dank alley and offers her a glittering smile and a chance for adventure. Rothburne Abbey has a unique position for her, one that will take her away from her hardscrabble life and give her a chance to be a lady. Things she could only dream of might be coming true. But some dreams turn out to be nightmares. Though Raina has traded squalor for silk and satin, something about the abbey is deeply unsettling.

Hoping it will get better
Revisado: 03-19-21
I’m hoping this book gets better and that I can hang in until then. There is a mystery element, which, quite frankly, is the only reason I’m still listening. I want to know the answer to the mystery. But the plot to set everything up is implausible and a bit over the top, and the main character is wishy washy, annoying, and unbelievable. I want to give her a good shake! And if part of your premise is that the characters are well read in literature and use it to leave messages to each other, get your book and character correct. She quotes a line saying it is spoken by Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. It’s actually spoken by Captain Wentworth in Persuasion. The narration would be okay except that it makes all the characters sound about 40 years older than they really are.

Any additional comments?
Just wow! This book gripped me from the beginning and kept me hooked right up to the end. I'm actually a little sad it's over. There are twists and turns that keep you thinking, but it's also just a very touching and interesting story. The characters are wonderful and truly drew me in. I just keep thinking, "Wow!"
