Historia
As a prosecutor in Houston, Penn Cage sent killers to death row. But as mayor of his hometown - Natchez, Mississippi - Penn will face his most dangerous threat. Urged by old friends to try to restore this fading jewel of the Old South, Penn has ridden into office on a tide of support for change. But in its quest for new jobs and fresh money, Natchez has turned to casino gambling, and now five steamboats float on the river beside the old slave market, like props from Gone With the Wind.

The cruelty was too much for me and I had ti fast-forward a lot through scenes. I also had trouble understanding the narrator, especially when he did women’s voices. Probably at the limit of my hearing scale.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Fantastic history well told
Revisado: 01-04-25
It was a challenge to not quit the book because of the vile actions and attitudes it portrays. But the truth must prevail and we are seeing history repeat. The story unwinds an amazing knit in an understandable and fascinating storyline. Well done!!!

Historia
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered

Amazing story told well
Revisado: 03-05-24
I was drawn to it as a true historic accounting but it took me a while to get up the courage to listen to it - knowing it would be heartbreaking and upsetting. It was, but it was also done with huge respect and honor to these men. While horrific injuries were described, it was done purposefully and only to the extent necessary to convey the valor, courage, and strength of every man from that ship.

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

Loved the writing, drama, and humor in this audio version was absolutely explosive. I was familiar with 3 of the stories, but learned new info about each. All 4 are just great.

Good beginner info, horrible narration
Revisado: 01-04-23
This touches on key PM points with good examples in applying them. Told as a story, although the dialog is rather stilted. The narrator is Bailey tolerable, even when okayed at 1.2 speed. If you are new to PM, consider the book for easy reference.

This really clarified things for me
Revisado: 02-28-18
This book takes the terminology and language of A Course in Miracles (ACIM) and provides clear explanations of terms as well as examples of how to apply the information. Marianne has the gift of phrasing a prayer in such a simple, clear way that conveys the desire without undue explanation and verbage
I started reading ACIM and doing the exercises many years ago but gave up because I got so confused about the point the book was making. Marianne clarifies the distinctions between Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Atonement and the other Christian terms in the context of ACIM. I didn't even clearly understand what a miracle was. I am ready to start anew with ACIM and the exercises.
Having said that, this book stands on its own, and I recommend it to everyone, whether or not you have any interest in ACIM. It has absolutely made a wonderful difference for me. In fact, it has given me such access to joy, hope and love that I have listened to it twice in the past three weeks. l got even more on the second listening. I would rather listen to the unabridged version, but I have not found that anywhere. So, I read it.

Historia
In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That's how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to this audio the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

Disappointing but insightful
Revisado: 08-31-17
I am surprised the rating for this book is so high and can only assume it is because of his music fans - of which I am one. I expected the narration to be fabulous since it was by the author and about his life, but for most of the book I felt he sounded bored and monotone, which had me tuning out or disconnecting with the story frequently. Because of this and some of the deplorable people in his life, I almost quit repeatedly, but I am a big fan of his music and wanted to respect his willingness to share his story. His reading is more lively and closer to what I was expecting in the last quarter of the book. It is an authentic look into Bruce's life and career, with complete transparency in his thinking, actions and inner workings. He does not try to try to show himself in the best light, but in an honest light. He does a great job providing full context of the times. I really enjoyed the insight into some of the songs.

Awesome story but editor fell down and stayed down
Revisado: 08-05-17
The story is riveting and Simon does a really good job with the narration, but the editor failed to do a respectable editing job. While any misspeaks or "do-overs" have been edited out, there are very long silences between chapters and at the beginning of many the Roll number for the recording is left in. The silences are so long, a few times I checked my device to make sure it didn't die. Still I am giving it high marks because the rest is so good.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Sci-Fi comes alive with humor and drama
Revisado: 03-30-16
This is one of the best books I have ever listened to or read. There is no way I would have enjoyed it half as much if I had read it. The narration is so awesome job that I checked early on to see if he was the author. This is so well written and delivered that it deserves all the accolades it has received. I love Watney's humor! I assume NASA does not send unintelligent people out into space, but Watney's McGyver-like skills are a bit over the top (he comes up with solutions fast to problems that you would expect a room of NASA experts to struggle over for days). But that did not stop me from being rivited at every plot twist to hear how he was going to turn it around. Weir perfectly balances giving just enough technical information to see the picture and understand what is going on without getting too deep in the details. I can hardly wait to see the movie and will probably circle back and listen to the book again once I do. I have hundreds of audio books with very few capturing me to the point that I want to listen to them again.

Good young adult sci-fi romance
Revisado: 03-30-16
This story is good for young adults because is it not full of sex scenes, but Kriket is unreleastic in that she is perfect and all the males fall in love with her or at least want her. It was a nice, light listen for me between books on heavier/deeper topics and did not irritate me as adult harlequins do.
