Plotinus (204/5 -270 CE), born in Lycopolis, Egypt, when it was part of the Roman Empire, was a major figure in the philosophical school later called Neoplatonism. Neoplatonists viewed reality as deriving from a single force or figure expressed as 'the One'. Two further concepts from Plotinus, 'the Intellect' and 'the Soul', are also principal features of his philosophy. These proposals led to the work of Plotinus forming a bridge between Plato and the monotheistic religions of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam as well as Gnosticism.

Incisive Western Philosophy

Plotinus presents the pinnacle of classical western philosophy. His worldview is inclusive yet rigorous. It includes many of the same great principles of Eastern philosophy. Although the reader does not sound authentic, he presents well enough.

In 2003, the Special Forces soldiers entered an area later called "the most dangerous place in Afghanistan". Here, where the line between civilians and armed zealots was indistinct, they illustrated the Afghan proverb "I destroy my enemy by making him my friend." Fry recounts how they were seen as welcome guests rather than invaders. Soon after their deployment ended, the Pech Valley reverted to turmoil. Their success was never replicated.

Amazing psychological insight

This book is a treasure trove of deep insight into the workings of the human psyche. Jung covers so much: art, science, philosophy, spirituality. His insight is the most holistic and way ahead of his time. It is still very relevant today.

Michal Gruber is one of my favorite fiction writers of all time. This book was disappointing. It was an interesting story but didn't go deep enough.

Not History, Simplistic viewpoint

I read the Taliban and liked it a lot. Descent into Chaos is very different. Rashid is only presenting his own viewpoint which he admits in the beginning. However, he is very simplistic in many of his views. He mischaracterizes the intellectual tradition of the neo-cons, says that central Asia is the birth place of terrorism, and says the US army is currently broken among other things.

From the perspective of half a century, it looks less like the last colonial war than the first postmodern one.

A Savage War of Peace is an excellent account of the French in Algeria. The author provides us with excellent analysis while still maintaining a lack of bias. The lessons that can be drawn from this account are very relevant today for fighting insurgencies.

Packer is a very observant and astute journalist. The Assassin's gate will give you an excellent impression of the human experiences were like in Iraq and how strategic decisions affected them. Generally he is not partisan or bias.
