familiar world unfamiliar writing style
Revisado: 06-21-24
There was just a little bit too much wordiness. I assume Larry Dixon was the primary author in this series ? It was all interesting information, but it wasn't quite interspersed with action enough... so sometimes it got quite tiring listening to the extended internal monologues.
I don't know how Lackey does it, but she manages to avoid that feeling of narration exhaustion.
Still, I enjoyed the characters and the story and look forward to further episodes in this story.
I consumed the story in Audible and thought that the narrator was pretty good ...but in addition to everything else slowing the story down, I felt that when he read the Griffin's conversation, the excessive rolling of the Rs and the pace of the speech was just a little bit too much.
I found myself getting impatient and setting the speed of the narration to 1.2 (which made the human characters too fast and the Griffin still a little too slow).

Historia
Eddie Hunter just wants to keep building his settlement, but somehow there's always something in the way. His good ties with Freyja have made him a target for one of the other AIs in the game. One of the other less savory AIs, who isn't too picky about how he expresses his displeasure. On defense against the opponents being hurled at him, the support of his party and the other adventurers in the area is critical, and beyond his expectations.

Historia
Eddie Hunter isn't stuck in the game Light Online, but if he wants to keep his job, he needs to stay there. It's not a hardship for him as he increasingly believes that his in-game life is far preferable to his out-of-game life. Working on a hidden development quest that he discovered by accident has him becoming more and more entrepreneurial even while running his own inn, but between him and his party, the Meadowlands is rapidly developing.

LitRPG that's great to read/ listen to.
Revisado: 09-13-22
See my review of the last book for more details but the short version is that this is a litRPG that rises above that category. it's good on its own merits, and is the type of story where an ordinary person succeeds spectacularly due to their own character and kindness towards those around him.

litRPG that exceeds the requirements of the medium
Revisado: 09-09-22
Whether you are into RPG literature or not, this is a great story. The narration is great and the story is engaging and draws you in quickly.
If you like stories about ordinary people making the best of their situation and going on to great success, you will like this story.
It sort of reminds me of Nathan Lowell's Quarter Share story about a young man making the best of the hand he's dealt, and succeeding partly because of the kind and generous way he treats those around him.

Great story and best cat like alien story ever.
Revisado: 08-30-21
Great story and best "cat-like alien" story ever. this is the second in the series so be sure to read the first one - Pride of Chanur - first. CJ Cherryh does better than anyone in inventing plausible aliens and giving them understandable societies and biology that affects, but does not lock-in, their attitudes and behaviors. Humans as much as the other aliens are informed by, and sometimes limited by , their inherent assumptions, needs, and expectations. Reaching across the barrier of species and situation, friendship and loyalty can still occur, but it requires extraordinary courage and strength of character. This is the kind a problem at the basis of most of CJ Cherryh's stories and this is one of the best. There are a couple more in the series and I wish there were a dozen more!

I always enjoy following stories from either sister. but I am looking forward to more from the family on the vampire planet. On the other hand I was glad to come back to Earth.
Basically I wish we had A new book from Both worlds every year! If I have any complaint at all I wish there was a little bit more of the personal romantic relationship developing than concentrating quite so much on solving the innkeeper political problems :)
But still, I enjoyed this installment, and am looking forward to the next one!

Maud Demille is a daughter of Innkeepers - a special group who provide "lodging" to other-planetary visitors - so she knows that a simple life isn't in the cards. Once a wife to a powerful vampire knight, Maud and her young daughter, Helen, were exiled with him for his treachery to the desolate, savage planet of Karhari. Karhari killed her husband, and Maud - completely abandoned by his family - has spent over a year avenging his debts. Rescued by her sister Dina, she's sworn off all things vampire.

A great expansion to the innkeeper universe!
Revisado: 05-08-21
I had read this before when it 1st came out but I very much enjoyed the audible version. A great central character and a lot of fun To follow.
I found it just a little unbelievable that a human (however well trained) would fare so well against the much stronger vampires, but the superior healing technology did well enough to make it convincing that she could fight convincingly, even if seriously injured, and recover from the serious wounds received from going toe to toe with vampires.
The romance was fun, even if they were both just a little too perfect, But I enjoyed the progression of the relationship and a chance to explore the vampire world and culture.
I am also intrigued about the hints of Innkeeper powers that Maud is discovering and how it might connect to the family finally finding their parents.
I am really looking forward to the next book!
