To know Marcel Proust is to love him.
One either loves or hates his writings.
I happen to be the former.
I lose myself in his melodious cadence and relax to his ingenious rhythmic descriptions of time place and characters.
Prior to commencing this journey ~ having finished Swans Way and now The Guermantes Way ~ I’ve listened to Proust’s Duchesses to help identify the women of whom he is so enamored and writes.
On to the next volumes !

I very much enjoyed, listening to the professor, match historical facts and events intertwined with today’s mythology

What can I say but that I adore Peter Mayle’s mind his sense of humor and his gift of storytelling.
Having just been to Provence, I laughed hardly at many of his antidotes and descriptions of the local folk and their traditions. I just love Peter Mayle
If you’re going to Provo or anywhere in the south of France, you need to read this book

We all know the names, Ritz, and Escoffier very well in modern society. What we don’t know is what these men did in their early careers separately and together to create the legendary persona they now have in European society.
This was a good rendition of what both went through to create their legends
I highly recommend this read.

I know this subject matter very well having read many many books about Sylvia Beach, Shakespeare and Company, the characters that frequented Shakespeare and Company during that period between World War I and World War II.
I found that the author placed so much unnecessary importance on the fact that Sylvia Beach and Adan or homosexual lovers. It was gratuitous and in my estimation completely unnecessary. We all know that Sylvia Beach and Adrian were in a relationship, so what, that fact pails in comparison to what these two women singularly and together added to the culture of Paris in that period.
That’s why I give it a “meh”

Even though I know this subject matter inside and out I found Ms Benjamin’s account very well presented.
Interesting small details bring all the characters to life.
A good read

This is a concise compact somewhat sanitized account of a middle aged woman’s escape from Nazi occupation of Paris. I’ve read many many accounts of Paris’s Nazi period of occupation in much more poignant terms than Miss Flanners account. Her approach is more journalistic and factual which is what I would expect from her journalist background. None the less I’m glad to have read this piece and would recommend it to anyone who would be interested in knowing what it took these poor souls to escape Nazi occupation persecution and oppression.
God bless their memories and may God keep us from repeating it.

Although I would categorize this book as being one for reference as it lists addresses names dates coupled with short accounts of what took place in each case, I would still recommend it as it summarizes life and times in post WWI Paris.
The author picks up places long since gone and many still in existence little known to most who visit Paris and have literally no idea of her vast and fabled history.

I’d just returned from Barcelona and wanted something to listen to from the area. The story was interesting albeit far fetched particularly the first segment. What single woman would bring a stranger / young man into her home at 3am ? Come on ! This is not a comment to denigrate the woman’s goodwill, but let’s face it. It was an extremely stupid thing to do. Then she ends up sleeping with a boy. Oh well. As I said it was interesting
