Historia
Even as a child in 1910, Sara Glikman knows her gift: she is a maker of matches and a seeker of soulmates. But among the pushcart-crowded streets of New York’s Lower East Side, Sara’s vocation is dominated by devout older men—men who see a talented female matchmaker as a dangerous threat to their traditions and livelihood. After making matches in secret for more than a decade, Sara must fight to take her rightful place among her peers, and to demand the recognition she deserves.

Engaging Story from the very beginning!
Revisado: 12-09-23
This story flowed and I was interested the entire way. Even though the chapters went back and forth between the grandmother’s and granddaughter’s lives, there was no point that felt disjointed; their stories simply built upon the ongoing narrative. I was sorry when it ended, and what could be a more certain proof of a book that was greatly enjoyed?
The narrator’s voice was warm and expressive also! I will definitely be looking for more books by this author and this narrator! Highly recommend this book!

Historia
Have you ever wished you could live in an earlier, more romantic era? Ladies, welcome to the 19th century, where there's arsenic in your face cream, a pot of cold pee sits under your bed, and all of your underwear is crotchless. (Why? Shush, dear. A lady doesn't question.) Unmentionable is your hilarious, scandalously honest (yet never crass) guide to the secrets of Victorian womanhood.

Interesting topic, extremely well read!
Revisado: 01-25-23
This book was interesting , and the narrator was absolutely great!
She spoke as if her listeners were her co-conspirators in an illicit
visit to times gone by. I found myself giggling and even snorting
(in a lady-like manner, of course!) at her engaging way of reading the material; she definitely elevated the experience.
I did learn what it was like to live before electricity, showers and of course, before there was actual medical knowledge of how women’s
bodies actually functioned.
I have a new appreciation of how much more comfortable, convenient and pleasant it is to live in the 21st century where women can lead independent lives if they wish.
And I will have to find some other books with this narrator.

Historia
Ellie Gardiner has landed her dream job restoring art at the mysterious estate of Pemberley. Once a majestic home in the Derbyshire peaks, the long-abandoned property is in desperate need of help with a crumbling east wing, overgrown gardens, and a house full of possessions belonging to the once wealthy Darcy family. The most bizarre bit, however, is an enormous mirror in the once great ballroom. How does an almost 250-year-old mirror have not one speck of dust nor any sign of age? And why does it not show her reflection?

Historia
Longbourn estate in Hertfordshire, home of the Bennet family, is entailed. Armed with this unfortunate knowledge, the females of the family have long lived with the threat of eviction from their beloved home should Mr. Bennet pass away before his time. When the unthinkable happens, the Bennet ladies prepare to leave their home as the heir arrives to take control of his inheritance. Salvation comes, however, by the most surprising of news: Mrs. Bennet is with child.

Interesting variation, made unbearable by the narrator
Revisado: 02-08-22
While the story itself was very original (I have read more than my share of P & P variations) and I have listened to hundreds of audible books, the narrator was without question absolutely terrible. She spoke so slowly and breathily, and with so many odd inflections, particularly at the end of every single sentence, that I was forced to increase the speed of narration to even try to listen. Worse, she quite literally has a speech defect that caused her to mispronounce every word ending in “d” or its cognate, “t” so that it sounded like a soft “th”, making, for example, “did” become “dith.” Do you know how many words end this way? I will be certain NEVER to buy another book narrated by “ Mary Sarah” or “Mary Sarah Agliotta. “

Historia
At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Easy listening in book form
Revisado: 05-24-21
Jennifer Worth is an incredible raconteur; she tells her stories of real people and real situations, and weaves them all together until the listener is completely engaged. I have listened to hundreds of Audible books, but this one, with a wonderfully intricate story, and the incredibly talented Nicola Barber narrating, kept me spellbound. I am utterly delighted that there are two more books in this series! Highly recommend!!

Original Pride and Prejudice Variation
Revisado: 12-31-20
The story had some new premises, that I, as a jaded Janeite still enjoyed. Kay Bea is a new author to me, but I would definitely purchase other books written by her. However, the choice of narrator was underwhelming. His male voices, particularly Darcy’s, were rich and full. However, every single female voice was strained and slightly higher pitched, with an almost wooden lack of expression. Every sentence spoken by a female character was delivered with the same bland, monotonous cadence.
If I hadn’t cared for the story, I wouldn’t have been able to listen at all.
I have hundreds of audible books, and I’m sorry to say, I will be careful in the future not to purchase any others narrated by William Matthews.

Historia
Will a mysterious note from the past doom the love of Jane Austen’s most beloved couple? A Peculiar Connection begins near the close of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Bent on preventing the engagement of her nephew to Elizabeth Bennet, Lady Catherine de Bourgh declares that any union between Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth would be “a sin against Heaven itself!” Her shocking revelation, along with a cryptic message written over twenty years earlier, thrusts the couple into a whirlwind of heartbreak and disbelief.

Very Original P & P Variation
Revisado: 10-20-20
I have listened to (and read) more than my share of Pride and Prejudice variations, and must say that this particular story was completely fresh; I have never seen the premise upon which this story was based, prior to listening to this book. The characters remain quite true to those depicted by the incomparable Miss Austen, yet there is more angst than in the original. The performer, Amanda S. Brown, has a very pleasant voice, and reads with occasional gentle emotion which greatly enhanced my enjoyment of this story. I highly recommend this book!

It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good, until a bunch of jerks think it’s hilarious to put the “butterface” (AKA me) on a wedding Kiss Cam with the hottest guy ever - and that old humiliation hits hard. I recognize him immediately. The hottest cop in Waterbury and totally out of my league. But then he kisses me. And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything. Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.

New Idea
Revisado: 09-01-20
Very interesting story, enhanced by the fact that the heroine is apparently not even close to being the beauty usually described in a romance novel. Apparently, she has a very large nose and has been stared at (not in a good way) since childhood. She’s over it, but won’t consider plastic surgery. All she has to do is find a man who can get over it too and love her for the woman she is: smart , ambitious and a member of a family associated with the mob.

Delightful
Revisado: 08-15-07
This one was very well written and contained many entertaining tidbits about life as a young unmarried woman in Jane Austen's England. There's time-travel and enough contrasting detail between modern-day independent women and their Regency counterparts to give the listener food for thought. In addition, the narrator was excellent, using an English accent for "Jane" and an American accent for Courtney, so the listener could not confuse which character's comments were
being spoken.
It only took me a couple of days to finish this one,(normally, I only listen during my work commute, but this one I turned on in the evenings, too, because it was so appealing) and I hope that the author will produce some more.
