Everything wrong with romance novels.
Revisado: 01-14-16
The main female character is a moron. She thinks she's strong because she has a quick temper but the moment someone stands up to her she crumples.
The main male character is a obnoxious and rude.
He literally contemplates raping her while spying on her while she's in the tub.
I've read Maya Banks books before I'm not expecting much more than a fluffy sexy read from her but this was insulting.

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

I wanted to like this more than I did
Revisado: 12-01-15
It felt more like a spy novel than a sci-fi book about aliens. Which isn't bad, I'm just not all that into spy novels. Even so it was well done and kept my interest through the whole thing.
I do wish more would have been done with the other aliens. It seems like I only got to know three. Just going off of the motivations of the first three it would have been interesting to hear more from the other's points of view.

Historia
Hank is a thug. He knows he's a thug. He has no problem with that realization. In his view the galaxy has given him a gift: a mutation that allows him to withstand great deals of physical trauma. He puts his abilities to the best use possible and that isn't by being a scientist. Besides, the space station Belvaille doesn't need scientists. It is not, generally, a thinking person's locale. It is the remotest habitation in the entire Colmarian Confederation. There is literally no reason to be there.

Pretty good
Revisado: 12-01-15
Speaking from a woman's point of view, I'm always a little hesitant to pick up books that look like this. (I think the pink bathrobe is what made me go against my instincts) Most of the time even the 'strong' women are cringe worthy and the sexism makes me want to throat punch someone. This book didn't have that. Not really.
I loved the humor in this book. There were so many times all I could think was, wtf?
I did feel like a lot of things were just skimmed over and that there could have been more and things could have gone deeper.
I haven't gotten the next book but I'm sure I will sometime.

Cliche
Revisado: 12-01-15
I listened to the whole thing, I'll give it that.
It wasn't horrible just very cliche. Nerdy girl doesn't realize how amazingly hot she is until her sorta trashy but really cool friend lets her rummage through her closet and forces her to go out in something that's cut above her ankles.
Hottest guy in town only has eyes for her even when she's still dressing nerdy.
She ends up changing everything about her life, even allowing him to dress her. But of course her giving up her career goals that she'd wanted her entire life was her decision because of course it was really what she'd wanted all along.
It bothered me that someone who is supposedly so smart and terrified of men makes the kind of mistakes that she does. I did like the parts with the shot gun and the baseball bat.
I could have done without the 30 minute it gets better speech. Really. I've never fast forwarded through a book before but I just couldn't take it. I get the point but the entire thing could have been summed up in one paragraph not an entire chapter.

Interesting take on Sci-fi Romance
Revisado: 12-01-15
I've read a few sci-fi romance that just ended up being alien men that were just like human men but bigger. This was not that. All the characters were human, (I think) but it was more like if the human race spread out over the next 5000 years and how different cultures would come from that. I wasn't really expecting the magic elements although they didn't detract from the book.
I really enjoyed it. The romance was slow. This wasn't your typical erotica porn. I liked it that way for the most part. While there was an instant connection between the two it wasn't unrealistic soulmates and undying love at first sight. It felt a little more real and was given time to progress and make you want to see them get together.
I thought the plot was interesting. Waking up centuries after an epic space battle to discover the people you saved thought you were a god. Interesting.

Surprising good.
Revisado: 04-30-15
I tend to keep away from YA novels. I typically dislike the characters and the way they interact with each other. I found the plot behind this interesting so I decided to chance it and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed it.
The main characters felt real and not one dimensional. The heroine doesn't fall into the submissive or altruistic hole that drives me crazy with "strong" female characters. Granted she did risk herself a number of times but I took that more to be her own arrogance and teenage belief she wouldn't die.
I did feel like instead of a novel I was reading a couple of novellas pieced together but I didn't mind that.
My biggest problem with this book is that twice it would have been far less interesting if anyone had said, "Hey, let's not be stupid and wait a few hours before doing this thing so we don't die horribly." You have people who spend their entire lives just trying to make it to the next day and they do things that are needlessly desperate and stupid.
Another issue was that the author clearly doesn't understand the meaning of expiration dates. 60+ years and all the food and gasoline is still perfectly fine? Really? I suppose if I allow for vampires I shouldn't complain too much about realism but still.
All in all I really did like the book and have already gotten the sequel.
