Beyond cliched into agonizing

POSSIBLE SPOILERS. Good narration but I DNFed this. All the cliches one after another making an already frayed plot fall apart. The quirky, foul-mouthed best friend, the insta loving and accepting future MIL, the recording artist MC who whips out the guitar on the slimmest of pretexts, the motorbike that MC rides when her fiancé died that way, the psycho ex hookup of his. The cute and lovable dog that brings them together. On and on, one after another until I gave up.

If you don’t buy the premise that passion overrides all, this plot is thin. Simon, so driven by duty that it leads him to reject a beloved sister is so overcome by his passion for Julianna that he abandons all the principles that pin up his existence. And Julianna, so disdainful of everything he represents and yet continues to hang on because she’s got a passion for him. I didn’t see anything that drew them to each other. No common ground other than sexual attraction. He was hard to take and she had little to no backbone. I love this authors other stories but the well developed characters, wonderful humor, and rich plot twists that are her signature were lacking in this one.

Georgette Heyer is always wonderful to listen to. My issue was with the reading. Horatia is read like an 8-year old girl, which makes the already dodgy age gap feel even more uncomfortable.
