Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Fun story, amazing narration
Revisado: 03-27-25
This was a wonderful novella, with quick and lively dialogue. Best described as a mashup of Parks and Recs and Deep Space 9. The narrator was a real treat, I definitely want to find more things she has read. Would also love a longer book set on this version of earth, I would love to hear more about the various extraterrestrial immigrants living there.

Good Apocalypse Book
Revisado: 09-19-21
Well written and great narrator. Love the average-woman protagonist. Made me sob in one spot so be warned—no spoilers though. I really liked all the practical considerations in this novel, and just in general how realistic and human it was. Kept me interested throughout.

An Excellent Sequel to Subversive!
Revisado: 07-30-21
I absolutely adored Colleen Cowley’s first book in this series, Subversive, and enjoyed this one equally as much. The world-building and character studies are really unique for the fantasy romance genre (or any genre, to be honest). I love the strong, complex protagonist Beatrix, as well as her multi-dimensional family and friends, and her employer, the Omnimancer Peter Blackwell. For fans of romance, the relationship dynamics are steamy yet realistic, and continue to evolve over this book. For those who like a more intellectual element, this volume contains some interesting political and moral dilemmas that may have you considering what you might do in the same situations.
I really like the narrator, Leanne Woodward. Her voice is clear, expressive, and soothing, and she does a great job of portraying different characters in a way that is convincing, immersive, and seamless.
If you haven’t already read or listened to Subversive, go back and get caught up. Since this book is second in a trilogy, you’ll enjoy it much more after the first one. Although this volume does contain some amount of exposition and backstory, and you’d probably be able to follow it ok, the first book is great and you definitely should enjoy them in order.

I Can’t Say I Honestly Liked It
Revisado: 07-21-21
There were almost no redeeming characters—and the ones who did have some redeeming characteristics weren’t very likable at all. While slow to get going, the plot had enough surprises to keep me interested through the end.
Although the narrator was capable, with good diction and accents, I’m not a fan of her voice. Not sure I would listen to other works she narrates.
If you like stories about rich people in unfortunate circumstances, this may be the book for you. Personally, I prefer at least one genuinely sympathetic character in my thrillers, more if possible.

One of my Favorites Series!
Revisado: 07-18-21
I am so glad this finally got an audiobook version! It’s such a unique storyline—romantic, yet empowering, and magical. Colleen Cowley is an excellent wordsmith, and the audio version really does this book justice. Leanne Woodward does an outstanding job with the narration, managing to be both prim and steamy, and always adorably expressive. I can’t wait for the next book to be released by Audible. I have already told so many friends about this series, so I’m glad it’s getting a well-deserved audience in this format.

Some lines should never be crossed. Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl’s silence – three unconnected events that will prove to be linked by one small town. While detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.

Great Crime Fiction Set in Ireland
Revisado: 06-29-20
Really love McTiernan’s writing. Tight, intricate plots, engaging characters, great pacing and settings. Satisfying but not predictable! One of my current favorite writers. This book is her latest and I’ll be giving her others another listen as well. Great narration too.

I wanted to like this. Neither the narrator nor the writing nor the characters held my interest. Everything about this was extremely one dimensional. The story seemed intriguing in theory but I just couldn’t get engaged, hung in until chapter 3, but I am done.

On a miserable November day in 1967, two women disappear from a working-class town on the Fraser River. The community is thrown into panic, with talk of drifters and murderous husbands. But no one can find a trace of Bette Parsons or Alice McFee. Even the egg seller, Doris Tenpenny, a woman to whom everyone tells their secrets, hears nothing. Tough One for an Audiobook
Revisado: 03-22-19
I had a challenging time being drawn in to this story. Factors include the non-linear nature of the narrative, which jumps around in time and perspective, and the narrator, who in my opinion lacked timing, inflection, and any sort of ability to differentiate different characters from one another. She may as well have been reading stereo instructions. Narration improved towards the end a little but I was already invested by then. It may improve on repeat listens.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

A Charming and Satisfying Story
Revisado: 01-09-19
I loved the characters, descriptions and the overall flow of this book. The narrator, Juliet Stevenson, is absolutely enchanting. Her voice is so flexible that at times I forgot she was a single person. The prose is a bit lush and at times was too dense for me to listen to while working at complex tasks, though it was perfect to get lost in on a long car trip. I enjoyed the book so much I will be buying in hardcover to savor again as well, and will be looking for Diane Setterfield’s other titles.
