Historia
Helen Bird will stop at nothing to find Henry, her musician son who has mysteriously disappeared in upstate New York. Though the cops believe Henry’s absence is voluntary, Helen knows better. While she searches for him—joined finally by police—Jonah is born to Lucie and Matt Pressman of Manhattan. Lucie does all she can to be the kind of loving, attentive mother she never had, but can’t stop Jonah’s night terrors or his obsession with the imaginary “other mom and dog” he insists are real.

Predictable with flat characters
Revisado: 04-03-25
The characters are unrealistic caricatures and it isn’t helped by the childish way it’s read. Skip this one. If I hadn’t gotten it in a package deal, I’d be returning it.

Historia
In this fresh take on love and trouble in America, Brock Hobson, an insurance salesman and Sunday-school teacher, finds his equilibrium disturbed by the results of a predictive blood test. Baxter, a master storyteller, brings us a gradually building rollercoaster narrative, and a protagonist who is impertinent, searching, and hilariously relatable.

I didn’t hate it, but don’t recommend it
Revisado: 03-14-25
The reader is good, performing the different characters using consistent tones of voice. The story meanders and never really goes anywhere. I know it’s supposed to be a commentary on something - the way we live or what is truly important, I don’t know - but this style didn’t resonate with me. It was not funny, as reviewed, and there were many parts that were too long and it skipped around, as if the author got tired of writing one part, so just moved to something else. I finished it, but I don’t recommend it. Time is finite - spend it listening to something more enjoyable.

When store manager Big Will announces he is leaving, the members of Movement spot an opportunity. If they play their cards right, one of them just might land a management job, with all the stability and possibility for advancement that that implies. The members of Team Movement―including a comedy-obsessed oddball who acts half his age, a young woman clinging on to her “cool kid” status from high school, and a college football hopeful trying to find a new path―band together to set a just-so-crazy-it-might-work plot in motion.

Believable Cast of Characters
Revisado: 02-04-25
This is an ensemble piece told from many points of view. Each character is real and sympathetic. You root for everyone, but things happen as life does. There’s a bigger message overall, but on the face of it it’s a glimpse at the lives of people who live hand to mouth. The system is upheld by mostly well-meaning people, but it showcases how far we have to come towards any type of equity. This might sound like a bummer, but it’s not. It’s really quite uplifting.

Real and Heart Wrenching
Revisado: 01-05-25
This author hasn’t had enough praise and recognition. Girl A was great and this one is better. I love the writing - all the tender details. Each character is fully fleshed out. It’s a very sad and depressing subject, but in good hands. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to her upcoming next one.

Revisado: 11-21-24
Such sharp disappointment. there was nothing scary or thrilling about this story. It was booooring. The werewolf bit is a gimmick. This is just a cheesy romance novel. I suppose this is a genre. Not one that entertains me.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Rare Story of Women’s Middle Aged Experience
Revisado: 10-15-24
This book is a modern tale of middle age, when one is privileged enough to take a breath and re-evaluate. Not every woman can remodel a hotel room or hire a personal trainer, but we can all relate to the shock and shame of aging and the longing to live authentically. The author read the book, so all of the inflections are meant to be there. I enjoyed the performance. There were things about the main character’s experience I related to, but she was ultimately unlikeable. She was so selfish in regard to her child and family. They seemed like props in her life. The writing is really good. It’s very vivid and exact. It gave me a clear picture of what the author wanted me to see - the marital home, the young man, the hotel rooms. I kept listening even if I didn’t love what I was hearing.

As the child of a Hooters waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, Margo Millet's always known she’d have to make it on her own. So she enrolls at her local junior college, even though she can’t imagine how she’ll ever make a living. She’s still figuring things out and never planned to have an affair with her English professor—and while the affair is brief, it isn’t brief enough to keep her from getting pregnant. Very satisfying story that was well-written
Revisado: 09-20-24
I loved this book. The pacing was excellent. The characters were multi-dimensional and all had redeeming qualities. Margo, the main character, is a modern voice. The ending was sweet and appropriate, not rushed. Religious folks might be shocked by Margo’s interpretation of Christianity, but it is done without judgement. I will check out others by this author.

A Modern Life
Revisado: 08-20-24
I wasn’t sure I would like this at first, but I kept
listening because there are some bits of great writing. It felt very real, with lots of fine detail. Some of the sections dragged on. At the end I wish she’d chosen to continue the story with vignettes and not to rely upon a montage. That felt rushed, as if she was tired of it or had a deadline to meet. I also was disappointed at one character’s unfair treatment by the author. But overall it was worth a listen. The characters had depth. It was very modern and mostly relateable.

Historia
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

Suspenseful; Satisfying Ending
Revisado: 05-14-24
This is a scary, thrilling, sometimes frustrating story with a hugely satisfying ending. It was not hard to figure out, but you had to wait for the characters to do so. It was elevated by using the conceit of not naming the characters. Still, you become attached to them. It’s a worthwhile listen.
