Historia
Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

This is a listen more than once type of story. 3 very different perspectives spanning so many years is quite a way to tell a tale! It's really relatable to see how others see us and things change over time and how events impact people over the long haul.

Historia
The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage.

Peek Into Revolutionary History
Revisado: 03-09-21
While the specific story is a fiction, it's rooted in real historical events. I especially appreciate the author's notes where she explained where the info came from. The whole story is like opening the door to a very important moment and getting to walk through with an invisibility cloak designed to offer the wearer psychological insight.

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

A Story You Wish Were True
Revisado: 01-24-21
As a native of Georgia, I felt especially connected to this story. I just visited the Golden Isles last year so it was close by in my memory and now I just want to go back. I appreciated that there were 2 different narrators, it helps keep a story straight. I did laugh though when there was a character who was Irish but he sounded more Indian? Good fun. I liked the story being told from the perspectives of the two main characters and the ability for the two to wind together by the end. Everyone needs a little adventure in their life! You also know that life changes so fast, you have to listen to the stories. The grandma had quite the life and deserved to reconnect to her youth before it was too late. A great read!

Historia
In 10 lectures, award-winning historian Patrick N. Allitt transports listeners to England in the 1840s and 1850s. During those two decades, Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, became one of the most influential people in the country and remains a figure of fascination even today. In fact, the British royal family as we know it wouldn't exist without the private and public actions of this detached, impartial, and upright political figure.

Immensely Informative
Revisado: 01-24-21
Admittedly, I didn't know a ton about Prince Albert before beginning. I have always been intrigued by the queen's utter and complete devotion to a man who died so young, in comparison to her. The torch she carried for him, to her grave, isn't something you see often. So, I was happy to dive deeper into the man behind the monarch. By the end, I gained a lot of respect for where he came from, what he was able to accomplish, and the serious impact he had on Queen Victoria's life. It really gave me a different perspective for the young queen and how much she relied on him. Imagining him coming from a situation where he wasn't particularly wanted or trusted by the powers that be and yet had such an everlasting footprint on it. A great read!

Historia
Maya loves to cook with her grandmother - her Halmunee - to connect with the rich family history associated with each dish, a history Maya's mom would prefer stayed in the past. While cooking with Halmunee, something remarkable happens - the food creates such a strong memory that Maya and Halmunee are transported back in time through the memory itself. Halmunee explains that the women in her family have the gift of time travel through food and Maya can do it too, if she practices.

Imaginative Time Travel
Revisado: 01-24-21
This book was full of brilliant descriptions that kept my mind thinking about the orchard and other places even when I wasn't reading about it. The way the scenes she witnesses come to life, the in between when she's not home but not in the scenes are intricate. The relationship with her family, the way she observes her mother and grandmother, the way she gets so invested in seeing more of these memories - it's a very unique way to look at life. I had suspicions about the ending but was not expecting the twist. So cool, I just kept wishing food had the same impact on me! Quite lovely.

A Familiar Voice For A Beloved Story
Revisado: 01-24-21
I might have a bias here because I both love Rachel McAdams and Anne of Green Gables. The first I saw of the latter was as a teenager, I checked out VHS from the library to see the mini series from the 80s and it was love at first watch. Perhaps because it has been so many years, I pictured the story differently as a visual in my mind as she read the story. How wonderful the details are that I can create a new world of images in my head. The story is a delight and listening to it in this voice made it that much more special. Did not want it to end.

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

I Wanted To Love It
Revisado: 01-24-21
I don't really use profanity but the fact that the first word had a word that most professionals wouldn't say in their book had me intrigued. I thought it would be a more 'buck the traditional standards' of getting across and let's get to it type of viewpoint. To be fair, I believe that we need all kinds of styles because we have all kinds of people. For the right person, this would hit them where it helps and would change them. Unfortunately for me, it did not. The recording quality felt it took place on a personal computer with a microphone built in. She sounded distant and sort of static-y at times. Her incessant use of F and other words you don't hear in this line of work was a bit distracting. Again, I think for the right person this would be perfect! I'm the type of person who takes something all the way to the end in hopes it gets better. However, I got close but could not finish it. I guess I was thrown off by her word choice that I couldn't really focus on what she was saying as much as I needed to in order to appreciate the message better. There are some valuable sentiments here but it almost seemed like she cussed in excess just because she could, like to say look - I am a PhD and I curse, so bad I'm cool! I'm sure that's just her normal speech and people who know her probably know that AS her but it might be off-putting to those who don't have that tendency.

Like an Intellectual Chat with an Old Friend
Revisado: 01-24-21
This book is as inspiring as it is depressing, at times. Having a personal perspective of the world's top job kind of changes the way you see politics in general. There's so much going on behind the scenes that the public isn't aware of when the president is in office. So much fandangling he has to do to make any progress. The same bill republicans were fans of when another republican put it up years prior is the exact same bill that will be thrashed to the ground when a democrat presents it. Having to have something McConnell wants from you in order for him to not viciously attack you on something else is incredibly disheartening. Hearing a republican from Florida was basically blacklisted for showing partisanship on a bill and hugging the president is again, depressing. You think you get it that politics is a game and is highly reliant on shenanigans for attention but this gives you a behind the curtain look at how things are really going. It's insightful and borderline hopeless to realize all the opposition one is constantly up against in the political arena. An impossible job for a person who knows how to play.
Learning more about Barack Obama's life, family, the way he thinks of things, the blink-and-you-miss-it moments, all the people he met, before and during his runs for office and getting out with the people. I've learned a lot not only about politics and the presidency but leaders around the world. I've looked up so many names and just from this book alone feel so much more informed about the world. Highly recommend!
