Historia
"It's just to say that no one has come to pick Nathan up from school, and we were wondering if there was a problem of some kind?" As Mark Douglas photographs a pod of whales stranded in the waters off Edinburgh's Portobello Beach, he is called by his son's school: his wife, Lauren, hasn't turned up to collect their son. Calm at first, Mark collects Nathan and takes him home, but as the hours slowly crawl by he increasingly starts to worry.

I liked it despite not liking the main character
Revisado: 06-23-24
I liked the story. As other reviews have pointed out, the protagonist has anger issues - especially toward women, but from my perspective, it makes him realistic and it adds tension to his character. I'm tired of stories about perfect humans - they don't exist. YES violence against women is particularly spineless and disgusting, but this character seems to have some awareness about it and some remorse.

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Eagerly awaiting Book II (SPOILERS)
Revisado: 04-12-24
Unique world and story in the crowded fantasy realm. Loved it, but ...
SPOILERS: things go a little too well for the hero which left me feeling torn. I was happy to see him succeed but come ON, give the guy some real challenges. That got a little old.
Ps. I write these for myself.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Why did l wait?
Revisado: 03-24-24
I thought this would be like the (significantly) overly-hyped Colleen Hoover novels until a friend - whose recommendations I trust - said she liked it.
Garmus is a talented storyteller. Her writing is crisp.. The story was a little predictable but still beautiful and worth the read.

By late 1988, hip hop was more popular than ever. But a tragedy at a concert fueled a different narrative: that rap music was dangerous. Enter Slick Rick, an artist well-aware of the power of storytelling.

I graduated from high school in 1988
Revisado: 10-29-23
I thought this was pretty self-serving for Will Smith. And it only scratched the surface of hip-hop and everything leading up to that year. I liked the interviews and original recordings, though. I'm a white kid from the suburbs I didn't get into hip-hop until college.

Not Hamnet, but still a good story
Revisado: 07-20-23
I believe I have read almost all the books written by O'Farrell available on Audible. She's an amazing story teller. While this is a different type of story from Hamnet and The Marriage Portrait - it's set in the mid-1970s and focused on the dynamics of one family - it's still incredibly well written and engaging.
I appreciate that it's read by John Lee, too. He can be so over the top sometimes, but I prefer it to the author reading her own work (usually).

I’m a sucker for Jojo
Revisado: 02-20-23
It was a bit long and had some cliche bits but Ms Jojo has a magical way of adding something fresh to all of her novels. I couldn’t put it down.
I knew The Giver of Stars was going to be a tough act to follow, and this didn’t beat that book - but this was still really fresh and engaging. Unlikely story? Yes. Flawed? Yes. Did I still love it? Yes. 100%.
I like so few novels these days.
I read it quickly because I wanted resolution but now I’m just sad that it’s over.

The hype?
Revisado: 02-13-23
Was it entertaining? Yes.
Did I listen to it in one day (while doing a ton of chores)? Yes.
Was it a train wreck? Also, 100% yes.
This story takes you to the most ridiculous of places. It's like the Winchester Mystery House - you open a door and it leads you to ... nowhere.
And the poor women in this book. I can't believe what miserable luck they had. The utter chaos was hilarious. The storyline about the missing girl was ludicrous. I was laughing while I was crying. God help these fictional people! I was emotionally invested, but I'm a sucker and now I feel silly.
Will YOU like it? Probably, because most people did.

Don’t believe the hype
Revisado: 11-20-22
I thought I was missing some culturally important feminist event by not indulging in a Hoover novel. I was wrong.
The writing, character development, and dialogue were overly simplistic. The sex was gratuitous. I understand that we had to know that they had a deep love for one another, but there’s more to love than sex.
In the epilogue, the author states she based these characters on her mother and herself. I’m sorry for that. But because of that, the the dialogue should have had more depth, the characters should be more interesting and dynamic (e.g., the flower shop owner, the multimillionaire software developer, the neurosurgeon, the popular chef).
I’m jumping all over the place, there’s just so much wrong with this book -
Oh! I failed to mention the attractive, white, hetero cast of characters. Can we get some diversity here?

Little sappy but I bought it
Revisado: 04-17-22
I liked the characters and the history - even though it was a light tough. It was a little sappy/purposely sad to draw a reader in but I bought it and I cried mostly because I’m a mom. I will look for other books by the author (when available). That’s all. Thanks, Jenny. Bye.
