Historia
A sweeping narrative that remakes our understanding of perhaps the most consequential period in American history, The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic shows how the great contest of that age is also the great contest of our age—and serves as a necessary reminder of how young and fragile our democracy truly is.

Good Topic, Poor Writing/Performance
Revisado: 11-13-24
Reconstruction is a crucial topic, but this book fails to do much more than monotonously catalogue its events. I don't disagree with its premise or believe it is inaccurate, but it seems unoriginal and, at points, it's almost offensively bland.
Likewise, the reader gives a technically proficient performance that is like listening to an overly ennuciated rack of nails on a chalkboard.

"Citizens" opens up a new way of understanding ourselves and shows us what we must do to survive and thrive – as individuals, as organisations, as nations, even as a species. Jon Alexander's consultancy, the New Citizenship Project, has helped revitalise some of Britain's biggest organisations such as the Co-op, The Guardian and the National Trust. Here, with the New York Times bestselling writer Ariane Conrad, he shows how human history has moved from the Subject Story of kings and empires to the current Consumer Story.

I like the analysis of different types of governments that are possible and the fact that the old stasis is breaking down. Good examples of positive alternatives.

Essential & Terrifying
Revisado: 05-14-22
McCoy presents a clear and comprehensive picture of how the 21st century will play out by putting it in its historical and ecological context. I wish his frame had been in the mainstream for the past 4 decades instead of the delusional nonsense I saw dominating discourse.
Now it looks like a metric ton of disruption and global suffering is baked in. Hopefully he's wrong. Very worth reading regardless.

Smedley Butler was the most celebrated warfighter of his time. Best-selling books were written about him. Hollywood adored him. Wherever the flag went, “The Fighting Quaker” went - serving in nearly every major overseas conflict from the Spanish War of 1898 until the eve of World War II.

Historia
In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.

A Must Buy for Hardcore History Fans
Revisado: 11-18-19
As he usually does on his podcasts, Carlin offers a highly engaging and entertaining work of historical exploration and storytelling in this book. The performance is especially good and this is probably best listened to as a result. It is more structured and less conversational than the podcast, but equivalent in my opinion.

Historia
We are familiar with maps that outline all 50 states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an "empire", exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories - the islands, atolls, and archipelagos - this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, author Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light.

In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

Great book/Performance editing sloppy
Revisado: 05-29-19
Really enjoyed this book. Especially appreciated Lepore's providing an accessible, bite-sized narrative of the whole course of American history. Didn't mind that it means it is a throwback to older types of historicization. You just have to know what you're reading; and those for whom this matters will know what they're reading.
The only problem I found was with the editing of her reading performance as the last section repeats completely and there are a couple small parts in the middle that repeat a phrase or two. The mistakes in reading she occasionally makes are just fine to leave in though. I like hearing authors read their own books and do not mind that they might make a few mistakes, not being professional narrators.

Historia
From Brexit in the UK, to Donald Trump in the US, to extremist parties in Europe and the developing world, populism has dominated recent headlines. What explains this rise of leaders who stoke nationalist anger in their countries, from Le Pen to Erdogan? How long will the populist wave last? Who will be the winners and losers in this climate, and how can we defend the values of democracy, free trade, and international cooperation? No one is better suited to explore these questions than Ian Bremmer, who has built his career on assessing global risk for his clients.

Good book with a big blind spot
Revisado: 04-25-18
Felt it was a very well written, concise overview of Bremmer's highly informed worldview. Excellent narration also. Very worthwhile for anyone interested in what's going on around the world in 2018 and what is likely to start happening soon. Not sure why so many struggle to grasp the insights he brings to bear. They're so straightforward when you see them!
That said, I think the exclusion of the militarism that is helping precipitate the current situation should have been addressed. Makes me significantly less enthusiastic about recommending it.
