Historia
For the Sake of the Game is the latest volume in the award-winning series from New York Times best-selling editors Laurie R. King and Leslie S. Klinger, with stories of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and friends in a variety of eras and forms. King and Klinger have a simple formula: Ask some of the world's greatest writers-regardless of genre - to be inspired by the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. The results are surprising and joyous.

I'm usually very picky about stories that feature Sherlock, I listened to this for free with the launch of Audible Plus and I'm glad I gave it a chance.
The description is accurate; this is not a collection of Sherlock and Watson adventures. More like some additional scopes to add to the imagination from many points of view, over many different spans of time and either featuring the main characters or just references to them. I really really enjoyed some of these and will probably buy the collection to keep forever because of them. There were none I disliked but I would have had trouble with some if my expectations were aligned with anticipation for something more traditionally Holmes in every single story.
Overall, great narration, fun stories, a good listen if you are a Sherlock Holmes fan.

Great on so many levels!
Revisado: 06-07-20
Bill Homewood reading any of Dumas' stories has been a pleasure to listen any time, and I'm on my third listen through this, alternated by Mr. Homewood's superb narration of the Count of Monte Cristo.
Each time I appreciate more and more his way of taking the listener back into the centuries these stories were based on, combining the way Dumas' contemporary readers might have read through his humor, or social and political ideas, many of which would be totally alien to our own times in general.
It's wonderful. I do wish to listen with Bill Homewood to all 5 of the series someday, but it's more than satisfactory for now to hear his interpretation of the characters in their relative youths in this first story.

Mr. Fry's Holmes voice is superb!
Revisado: 03-14-19
I love Stephen Fry's voice. His accents are wonderful (American improves as the stories progress), and I could listen to his Sherlock Holmes characterization very happily for any length of time. The stories truly are enormously entertaining even in 2019, both modern in the sense of emotional, societal and intellectual human interpretation, and quaintly outdated in culture, technology, and psychology. I found the latter to be one of the most fascinating parts of the stories, Stephen Fry's brief summaries between them help very much to align our understanding of those pieces to Doyle's contemporary audiences. A necessary addition in my opinion.
The best audiobook(s) I have ever had the privilege to listen to, and I am restarting the series immediately after finishing here for I believe each listen will offer new perspectives much like a complex movie does for many. And, I really do love Stephen Fry's voice.

Great story, excellent narration!
Revisado: 02-09-19
Very fond of Frank Muller's interpretation of the characters in the Dark Tower series, particularly the Gunslinger and Eddie. Would like to hear his take on the later books someday if they are in existence. I've enjoyed reading the books and also listening to the audio versions years later, and I recommend each to anyone who enjoys Stephen King and/or alternate universe fantastical science fiction with more good story telling and adventure than too much action.
