Good story, but that's as far as it goes
Revisado: 02-14-25
This could have been a great book. the story is pretty damn good, the trouble is the author feels compelled to overexplain every word to the point where he even overexplains the words he's using to over explain with, and the words he uses to over explain the over explaining. confusing? trust me on this one. it's annoying! there's one point in the book where it seems to take three whole chapters for him to explain 20 seconds of action, and sadly there is a lot of this in the book. for example, at the end of the book the second to last chapter there is an approximately 3 second action sequence, that takes about 25 minutes of narration to get through. every time a character looks into the eyes of one of the other characters. it takes a half a chapter to describe all the different things he sees and then the change in it and over and over, A good 60% of this book is annoying over explanation, things that did not need to be in the book. I feel like this author wrote the book didn't have enough to make it a whole book and because he couldn't come up with more story to make it a whole book, he just decided to overexplain every word in the book to a degree that I can't even explain in a way that you will understand.
this could be a good series and it could have been a great book but there is no way in hell. I will put myself through that again in hopes that this author would not torture me like that another time, so sadly this will be the only one I read, and now I understand why audible let me have it for free.

Typical Mark Greaney, awesome!
Revisado: 07-19-24
A well written book. great story and awesome narration, Mark Greene is one of the few writers that's able to write these stories with very few flaws in the storyline that just aren't believable, the only writer that I've ever read his books that had no storyline flaws, was Andy McNabb, but then I suspected that the story probably wasn't as fiction as he said it was.
This book has a good strong character, supporting characters, and a very interesting story, I enjoyed it immensely.

What could have been very good was destroyed.
Revisado: 05-15-24
The author of this installment of the Peter black series must have been high as hell. when he wrote it. I couldn't get through the entire book. his overuse of adjectives and over describing of every single line in the book. the only time there's even the slightest reprieve is when there's dialogue between two people and you think oh God he's finally ended that, but I would say more than half of this book could be just thrown in the trash and you put all the rest together and you understand it much better.
The author describes everything five different ways. you can't read a paragraph with without 20 or 30 adjectives in it. this distracts so much. I got well over halfway through it and couldn't follow the storyline. it's so distracting that there really is no storyline. you're constantly trying to skip through his over description in every sentence, just so you can understand what's going on. that's old saying you can't see the forest through the trees this book. does that to the reader or listener, in this case You can't follow the storyline because the author focuses more on describing and setting up every scene and then continually doing it through the scene as it unfolds. there is not a non-descriptive sentence in this book except during dialogue between two characters. I just couldn't finish it and I loved of Archer's books, he certainly did not write this one though, unless he completely changed his writing style. Even George RR Martin, who overdescribes most scenes to an extreme like this, knows that you can't do that in everything. he has some very heavy over-descriptive parts in his books, but not every sentence. every paragraph everything. Granted he does too much as well, but you can follow the story somewhat at least.

decent books but could have been way better
Revisado: 05-09-24
Although the outline of the story is quite good, the execution is very subpar, for Drake to be ex Delta Force., whenever it's convenient for the author, he's a complete idiot. Things that should add up never do to Drake. he has absolutely no sense of awareness or his surroundings and he can never put two and two together until it's convenient for the author at the end, This is really too bad because it could be a really awesome book, if the author just put a little more effort into being more creative with his story. for example, in book 3 which by far is the worst of them, but they all have this same problem, three just has it the worst,. When Drake and Liz go to the Mansion of the two CEOs that they suspect may have information for them and they see the motorcycle race away from the scene (same motorcycle that raced away from the last murder scene) and near run them over, then they go up to the Mansion and they see the two dead CEOs through the window with a revolver on the ground by each of them, and after other people in their succession of going through these motions have recently been killed, including two attempts on Drake's life. his immediate thought is oh they must have committed suicide. Just because it was set up to look like a suicide, poorly I might add. It clearly wasn't the guy that left on the motorcycle that killed them! That doesnt don on Drake this ex-delta Force guy at all. in fact, it's more than a day later that he finally realizes that they were killed. how can he figure all this stuff out that he's supposed to be figuring out, and be that stupid?
This is only one of a lot of these very same kind of situations instead of the author being a little more creative and having Drake be what he really would be in real life a lot bit more skeptical an hyper aware of his surroundings, like operater would be, this make the situation a little more complicated for the author, but much more believable, instead he chooses easy everytime, the author actually would have to think and come up with it. creative way to make this work. it's always done in a way that whenever he needs Drake to be an idiot, Drake is an idiot because it makes it easy writing for him. Like I said this is just too bad because he is a decent writer. he's just not spending the time to make the story work and be believable. I like the characters in his books. the narration was done well, but these blatantly very weak situations in the story. just ruin it. I would like to finish the series but I just don't think I can go through another one that falls apart so easily.

Could have been really good but
Revisado: 04-06-23
There were so many ridiculous flaws with the story that it was hard to even finish.
For an author that goes way overboard on detail and overexplaining, this should never have happened. these 2 hardened terrorists that didnt break down in Guantanamo, suddenly turn into sniviling scared crybabies when their plan went awry. Then they have no pre-planned escape for after the plan, even thought they discuss the escape earlier, then they are scared the whole escape, but werent scared in Guantanamo. Not likely!
Then the author wants us to believe a Navy seal commander wouldnt blow up the bus on the property they are building the bomb on and when they are all there for sure, but instead wait until they get within striking distance of a school first because there will be an investigation if it blows at the farm but wont be if ot blows at the school. Really? This concept is so ridiculous that its difficult to even pretend it makes sense.
I get the impression that the author gets so caught up in writing and overexplaining every useless detail that he just doesnt even care about whether the story is even remotely believable. If done better this could have been a very good book, the concept was good, but the execution was terrible to the point of childish. Too bad

Revisado: 01-20-23
Great book I loved the sarcastic smartass matt Drake in this one, good pace of the story and lots of believable action.
Finally a book Scott Brick did well too, most of his are just way over emphasized at the wrong places or everywhere, but this fit his style well and he did a much better job on it.
