A new favorite. Dazzling doesn’t give it justice.
Revisado: 07-01-23
This book was a gamble. It was the deal of the day, which are often just bad. But I was so pleasantly surprised, I devoured the book in three days.
Hayes is delightfully complicated. An addict, whose narcissistic tendencies, bleed through and translate into a deep desire to be a better person.
Yousef is quiet and brainy. And a perfect love interest. Such a nice balance of two masculine characters who happen to fall in love.
The plot twists and turns weave into a fascinating mythology that makes this love story a fantastic example of what makes great science fiction. Exploration of the human condition through science. Just fantastic enough to be interesting, plausible enough to allow suspension of disbelief.
Read this book. You will not be sorry. I will read it again. And will watch for this author’s work for sure.

Historia
In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends...and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc's feeling the social pressure to propose. But it'll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from "I don't know what I'm doing" to "I do". Good thing Oliver is such perfect Husband Material.

Such a disappointment
Revisado: 09-05-22
I was really excited for this book.
Pros - hysterically funny, mostly likable supporting characters
Cons - overly long, Luc is often insufferable, Oliver is a caricature of obsequiousness. I skipped over long sections in a few places because the horse was just so very dead. And the ending just makes me want to throw things.
I wanted so badly to like it. As much as I laughed, often out loud and in public, I should have. But I can’t overlook the annoying protagonists when it ended like that!

Historia
Now living in Los Angeles with former Navy SEAL Nick Reno, artist Perry Foster comes to the rescue of elderly and eccentric Horace Daly, the legendary film star of such horror classics as Why Won’t You Die, My Darling? Horace owns the famous but now run-down Hollywood hotel Angels Rest, rumored to be haunted. But as far as Perry can tell, the scariest thing about Angels Rest is the cast of crazy tenants - one of whom seems determined to bring down the final curtain on Horace and anyone else who gets in the way.

Michael Pauley is terrible. The story is fun.

Michael Pauley’s characters sound the same between books. He’s mechanical also. Josh can do better.

Historia
A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Really fantastic speculative science fiction
Revisado: 08-18-18
I loved this book. I was intrigued by the concept of a genderless society. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes scifi full of philosophical questions about the human condition. And I love that it's not 27 hours long.
I was really disappointed by the narration. George Guidall was both boring and difficult to follow. He didn't really differentiate Genly from Estraven in his narration and I often found myself wondering which protagonist was speaking. Recorded books should really consider recasting and rerecording this audiobook.

Not what I normally expect from MC
Revisado: 01-11-18
It’s clear this was one of Ms. Calmes’ early books. The writing is really not good. The pacing is weird and the point of view changes are abrupt and jarring.
The characters are not believable. Jude feels like a female character, not a gay man. The dialog from Eoin is also really hard to follow. She was trying for a foreign accent and feel, but it’s just clunky.
I recommend picking another of her many excellent books.
