Unexpectedly touching!
Revisado: 11-08-24
I never particularly connected with the movie or the story and decided to read this book on a whim but I absolutely loved it. The writing is direct and no-nonsense but conveys a deep reverence for nature, love, and friendship that was deeply touching. I look forward to reading this book to my children someday ❤️

Historia
Brought up in the household of a powerful Baron, Candide is an open-minded young man whose tutor, Pangloss, has instilled in him the belief that 'all is for the best'. But when his love for the baron's rosy-cheeked daughter is discovered, Candide is cast out to make his own way in the world. And so he and his various companions begin a breathless tour of Europe, South America and Asia, as an outrageous series of disasters befall them - earthquakes, syphilis, a brush with the Inquisition, murder - sorely testing the young hero's optimism.

Incredibly modern satire
Revisado: 10-07-24
Despite being very dark indeed, this is surprisingly fun and readable. Definitely the first I've binge read a work of classic fiction, much less philosophy!

Fantastic series
Revisado: 01-02-24
The best series I've read in years. The story and characters grow further in epic folklore style and stay true to themselves in doing it.

Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

A grown-up tale for those who loved Tamora Pierce as children. I'm sad to finish it and excited to read the next one!

Historia
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

The perfect young adult adventure for adults
Revisado: 08-01-22
I love this book! It's hard finding fantasy and adventure stories that I connect with as an adult the way I did as a teenager and this is one of those rare books! I can't recommend it enough.
