Raventree Society: Season One by JE Purrazzi is an interesting, loosely connected series of ghost stories. The writer does an excellent job bringing the classic ghost tale into the modern world. Each individual horror story in the book is a quality stand alone story. In fact, I wish it had been a collection of spooky ghost stories instead of trying to make it a complete novel. Purrazzi is at her best when setting up the encounter, building suspense as the conclusion draws near and keeping true to the horror style. What didn’t work were the characters. Other than the protagonist, the other characters were so flat and one dimensional that I had a difficult time telling them apart, which was fine because they are largely interchangeable and unimportant. The suspense was not all it could have been because I didn’t care if the supporting cast lived or died anyway. I think that there are excellent stories to be told by Purrazzi, I hope with more experience and a better editor that the can come out.

Separately, this review would be incomplete without discussion of the narrator. As there are no other works listed by T. Bill James, I assume this is his first audiobook narration, and what a spectacular job he did with the reading. James brings emotion into the story, relaying the intensity or suspense of the action scenes with his pacing and voice. Each of the characters have a unique, identifiable voice to make it easy for the listener to determine who is talking in dialogue. James’ narration masterfully blends enhancing the story via voice acting without distracting from the work. I hope to hear more from James going forward.
