Historia
Daniel Hill will never forget the day he heard these words: "Daniel, you may be white, but don't let that lull you into thinking you have no culture. White culture is very real. In fact, when white culture comes in contact with other cultures, it almost always wins. So it would be a really good idea for you to learn about your culture." Confused and unsettled by this encounter, Hill began a journey of understanding his own white identity. Today he is an active participant in addressing and confronting racial and systemic injustices.

I'm not White
Revisado: 12-02-19
I read this as part of a book circle at my church. I am not White, so I found many of the points discussed to be obvious, and common sense; but in listening to the discussion at church (primarily White) I realized that some of these things are not obvious to White people. For that reason, I would recommend it to White people, with the caveat of following up with a person of color on points you think are ridiculous. I would also suggest, if you are reading this as a manual to "diversify your church"; that you consider racial equality is not achieved by having more folks of color in your church, but by being the environment they would feel welcome in, if they chose to visit. To many churches think they need more people of color, like POC are a commodity; if this is your church, and the reason you are reading this book-you need to spend some serious leadership time examining your motives.

In January 2019, culture writer Anne Helen Petersen set the internet on fire with her viral BuzzFeed essay diagnosing “millennial burnout” - a chronic state of stress and exhaustion that’s become a “base temperature” for young people today. Now, she continues this generation-defining conversation in a brand-new format, interviewing millennials around the country about their own deeply personal experiences with burnout, and the culture that creates it.

Good Quick Listen
Revisado: 12-01-19
It was a good quick listen for a time filler while I was cleaning the house. Narration was good, and there were a few novel points brought up. I don't feel like I learned anything new, interesting or impactful; but I got it for free, so can't really complain.

Heartwrenching, but a Must Read.
Revisado: 12-01-19
Chanel Miller does an amazing job of keeping emotions in check while reading her narrative. I had a hard time keeping mine in check listening. She does a beautiful job of weaving together her experience, with the snippets of her life that shaped her, and the acknowledgement of the privileges that allowed her to make it through the system. The years of agony and victimization by not only Brock Turner, but also the public and our court system, should have been relieved by the fact the system "worked". She was vindicated in all of her efforts by a jury-Brock Turner was guilty. Those that defended him were wrong. The outcome of the case was infuriating-and I greatly admire Chanel's ability to pick herself up, and continue the fight as a beacon for other survivors. She is an amazing Chinese woman; whom I admire greatly for not crumbling under the pressure of a system stacked against victims, to push through all of the heartache this case entails, and not to be crushed by the fact at the end of the day, they system didn't care she was right. I am so glad I listened to this narrative-it changed my perception on advising people to report their assaults, and the importance of advocating for structural change in our legal system. She is an eloquent writer, and I hope she continues her advocacy for victims, and documenting the journey.

Characters were well done, and story was a good blend of simple, funny, and thought provoking. Obvioisly intended for a young audience, but I found it enjoyable to listen to with my kids as well. Nice listen for a car trip.

Historia
Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

The voice, in terms of the main character and the performer, was perfectly crafted to make the foreigness of a land filled with kings and gods relatable. I continue to be amazed by CS Lewis.

Diane Guerrero, the television actress from the megahit Orange Is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, was just 14 years old on the day her parents were detained and deported while she was at school. Born in the US, Guerrero was able to remain in the country and continue her education, depending on the kindness of family friends who took her in and helped her build a life and a successful acting career for herself, without the support system of her family.

Compelling (yet very millennial) Voice
Revisado: 02-24-18
The story itself was compelling, and it was amazing to listen to Diane Guerrero speak of her experiences, through her own voice inflection. The voice was definitely millennial though, as I had to wonder on occasion if she actually wrote some of her phrasing into the text version of the book-as her voice inflection as an interjection was the only thing that made some of it work.

Enchanting
Revisado: 01-20-18
Wonderfully done. I listened to it with my 10 year old son, and both of us were enthralled and engaged. Great performance of a wonderful story. Really appreciate that the main character is an outspoken female, who is able to navigate the sexism around her. Also really appreciate how the author was able to make such a fantastic adventure so relateable. I could almost believe there were Victorian era dragons flying about.

Revisado: 12-26-17
The narration was great. I put this audio book on during chore time; and my 10 year old actually asked me if he could clean his room, so we could keep listening. That in and of itself is worth 5 stars across the board!
