Boring
Revisado: 11-05-24
I loved Dick Francis and I liked Felix Francis’ previous books. What happened? This could have been a Wikipedia entry on horse racing and betting in England. Interesting but not a mystery! And the sex scenes were totally gratuitous, adding nothing to the story. And pedantic to boot.

Historia
Stephen Munro, a demobbed army officer, reconciles himself to taking a job as a footman to make ends meet. Employed at Wintringham Hall, the delightful but decaying Sussex country residence of the elderly Lady Susan Carey, his first task entails welcoming her eccentric guests to a weekend house-party, at which her bombastic nephew—who recognises Stephen from his former life—decides that an after-dinner séance would be more entertaining than bridge. Then Cicely disappears!

Fun. Great narrator voice. Easy to listen to. And I didn’t guess the ending. (But it was entirely plausible!)

Enjoyed reading about Lord Peter & Harriet in their mature years. The narrator had a soothing voice but swallowed the last syllable often.

Historia
On a cold November evening, Guido Brunetti and Paola are up late when a call from his colleague Ispettore Vianello arrives, alerting the Commissario that a hand has been seen in one of Venice’s canals. The body is soon found, and Brunetti is assigned to investigate the murder of an undocumented Sri Lankan immigrant. Because no official record of the man’s presence in Venice exists, Brunetti is forced to use the city’s far richer sources of information: gossip and the memories of people who knew the victim.

Listen because I love the narration
Revisado: 03-25-23
I’m getting tired of Brunetti’s knee-jerk sanctimonious reaction to nearly everything Catholic. He attributes bad motives to nearly every Christian person or practice. It is so predictable. He is such a moral, thoughtful, kind person but when it comes to religion he is so cynical.

Padded!
Revisado: 03-14-23
The text felt padded-too many descriptions of tired faces & dark circles under eyes! Too many times Bess asks herself why someone would do this or that. Too many fortuitous trips to England.

WHY did they leave Papavray?
Revisado: 01-18-23
All of a sudden they leave Papavray. Why? There are no goodbyes or explanations. The USA stories are just a personal agenda of their movements w/ none of the charm of the Papavray stories.

Historia
Arriving in London on leave, Bess Crawford receives an unusual summons from the War Office. She's been requested to accompany a wounded soldier to Buckingham Palace, where he's to be decorated for gallantry. Though she is certain she's never met or nursed Sergeant Jason Wilkins, she cannot refuse the honor. Heavily bandaged and confined to a wheelchair, the soldier will be in her care for barely a day. But on the morning after the ceremony when Bess goes to collect her charge for his return journey, she finds the room empty.

Boring
Revisado: 12-31-22
Boring story. All over the place. Confusing long-winded descriptions of chases that I couldn’t follow. Unrealistic that Bess could run around the countryside for so long. Didn’t care what happened to the characters. & I LIKE Bess Crawford mysteries almost as much as the Ian Rutledge series.

Carole Seddon can keep Bracketts running, in exchange for assistance on her Chadleigh biography. A lot of gratuitous Catholic bashing
Revisado: 11-28-22
Why is the Catholic faith the last religion it is OK to denigrate without shame? Why is birth control brought up by a minor character as a way to criticize the Catholic faith? Why is every sympathetic character given to diatribes about Catholicism?
In this story the terrible psychological trauma of WWI is used to justify misinterpretations of Catholic teachings.
