Well-Examined Life Well Worth Reading
Revisado: 03-29-25
Beautifully written by Yu Miri, translated by Morgan Giles, at times in poetic language, this gentle memoir muses over what could be a single day or a lifetime. The narration is sheer perfection by Johnny Heller. In a flowing almost circular style, the main character speaks as a ghost reviewing times, places, and people in his life with side quests into historical detail and recurring scathing criticism of government handling of unhoused people, always coming back to Ueno Park. This well-examined life with it's mundane struggles and unfair tragedies is well worth reading.

For the first time Mrs. Pollifax isn’t working for the CIA so this story takes depth and detail, always so well done, to another level.

A wealthy and notorious clan, the Bellefleurs live in a region not unlike the Adirondacks, in an enormous mansion on the shores of mythic Lake Noir. They own vast lands and profitable businesses, they employ their neighbors, and they influence the government. A prolific and eccentric group, they include several millionaires, a mass murderer, a spiritual seeker who climbs into the mountains looking for God, a wealthy noctambulist who dies of a chicken scratch.

DNF Narration is creepy
Revisado: 01-08-25
This rambling gothic-fantasy-horror novel is so well written, and even though it’s creepy, I’m enjoying following along. However the narration is also extremely creepy with wholly unnecessary inflections. I prefer to draw my own conclusions and not have the gothic-fantasy-horror aspects forced on me with overly dripping gauzy reading. Going to the bookstore for a paper copy!
Update: mistakenly kept listening. The rest of my review will be like the child at the end of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” — I can’t see the merit in this rambling absurdist delusion-filled story. Any individual sentence may be nicely penned, but the rest—characters, personalities, scenes, imaginings— is not. What barely lives as a story line languidly rambles like a drooling drunk slumped at a bar. Maybe it’s just the narration which speeds up and slows down as the narrator sees fit, adding a layer of interpretation that is beyond unnecessary. Why even review such a book? Because it is so highly acclaimed and I am astonished at the praise. It’s not the disjointed flashbacks, or even the fantasy, violence, and horror, that are woven through. It’s the distasteful sense of voyeurism and seeing the slimy underside of everything but without conviction, without confidence, as though the entire book is the author saying “I shouldn’t be telling you this.” From JCO’s Masterclass, I understand she may therefore feel this review shows she succeeded in writing a different kind of book. And it may be the narration undermined the writing. But I don’t feel the strength of a confident story and I can’t wade through to the end.

Outstanding as always
Revisado: 11-09-24
I always enjoy Mrs. Pollifax books. This one had a little less of the violent episodes which I don’t enjoy that much so that was good. There were some added layers of culture and history of Italy in general, but Sicily particular which I thoroughly enjoyed. Of course if you know Mrs. Pollifax, you know I recommend this one.

Important reviews - but reading barely acceptable
Revisado: 10-30-24
As a huge fan of Korean drama, I was interested to hear these reviews. Sadly the reader/performance/narrator was really not up to the task. I have never experienced this from Audible before -- and I listed to a LOT of books. The voice sounded like the reader had a cold/allergies, and was speed reading as if to get through it as soon as possible, so no time for any inflection at all. There was no editing of misspoken sentences, they were simply re-read live. The reader struggled with basic pronunciation, including dropping off letters at the start or end of a word. For example, it was hard to hear (with headphones) if they said "direction" or "irection." Seriously, Audible? Do you not listen to your own recordings? Disappointed and this was not even work the $2.76 paid for it.

Really good just not for me
Revisado: 10-22-24
The story was very well done from beginning to end. The narration was excellent. I think it might be a thriller genre. I’m not totally sure, but it was enough of a thriller that it’s just not for me. But it did keep me reading in spite of my hesitation so that’s a strong recommendation.TW the story does contain violence.

Dear God Audible No
Revisado: 10-03-24
This delightful teacup cozy murder mystery was absolutely fine on its own. But dear god, Audible, please don’t ever put a sung song — in the guise of a performance? — in the middle of a story. Thank you.
