Historia
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

Very Detailed Survival Story in the BWCA
Revisado: 02-13-25
Would highly recommend to anyone heading to Minnesota’s remote wilderness, the BWCA, or even the Canadian Version - Quentico Provincial Park.
Overall the book was great, and provided a ton of detail on what happened, who is where, what lakes they are camping on, and the rescuers action plans. I’ve been to these areas several times so it was interesting to hear about other peoples experiences in the BWCA.
Sometimes it was a little too detailed, but painted a very vivid picture of the situation, especially when discussing traversing bogs, being prepared and having the right knowledge and tools can literally be life saving, something as small as a whistle, could end up saving you.
It is a testament to the Search & Rescue Folks up along the North Shore, without their constant efforts one characters story line could’ve ended much differently. The DNR, MNR (Cunucks), Cadaver Dogs, Two Habors Deputies, the pilots of search planes & helicopters, and other volunteers did everything they could to bring the camper home.
It’s a nice reminder to let people know your plans if something goes wrong, letting his mom know to call for help if he hadn’t called home yet was a critical moment to ensure his survival. Things can array for even the most experienced guides and wilderness enthusiasts.

What drug lords learned from big business. How does a budding cartel boss succeed (and survive) in the $300 billion illegal drug business? By learning from the best, of course. From creating brand value to fine-tuning customer service, the folks running cartels have been attentive students of the strategy and tactics used by corporations such as Walmart, McDonald's, and Coca-Cola.

A well written book about the narco economy from drugs to human smuggling. The data referenced is a little dated but the trends and profit centers remain the same, just in 2025 dollars.

Historia
While America held its breath in the days immediately following 9/11, a small but determined group of CIA agents covertly began to change history. This is the riveting first-person account of the treacherous top-secret mission inside Afghanistan to set the stage for the defeat of the Taliban and launch the war on terror. As thrilling as any novel, First In is a uniquely intimate look at a mission that began the US retaliation against terrorism - and reclaimed the country of Afghanistan for its people.

Interesting Insight
Revisado: 11-17-24
The detail provided is incredible. It describes how the team was assembled and their backgrounds, the interactions between US Agencies and the local NA leaders/forces, the logistics involved, and how the battles progressed. Provides a perspective of how things planned to go forward, important leaders for the future of democracy in the country, when in reality the Evacuation of Kubal by the US ended poorly and the rise of the Taliban again.

Historia
A century before Britain became involved in this terrible business, whole villages and towns in European countries were being depopulated by slavers, who transported the men, women, and children to Africa, where they were sold. This is the forgotten slave trade, one which saw over a million Christians forced into captivity in the Muslim world. Starting in the ancient world, Simon Webb traces the history of slavery in Europe, showing that the numbers involved were vast and that the victims were often treated far more cruelly than black slaves in America and the Caribbean.

Very informative
Revisado: 09-03-24
An interesting and very informative read. Slavery is seemingly ingrained in the human psyche with almost every culture and people having been a slave owner or slave themselves. It provides unique insights about the logistics, diplomacy, and the different types of slavery. Few people in today’s society have any idea of how widespread slavery actually was, and how recently it was “outlawed” in several countries. The book presents a pretty comprehensive overview without bias and finger pointing.

Historia
From the assassination that triggered World War I to the ethnic warfare in Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia, the Balkans have been the crucible of the 20th century, the place where terrorism and genocide first became tools of policy. Chosen as one of the Best Books of the Year by the New York Times, and greeted with critical acclaim as "the most insightful and timely work on the Balkans to date" (The Boston Globe), Kaplan's prescient, enthralling, and often chilling political travelogue is already a modern classic.

Historia
At the heart of Africa is Congo, a country the size of Western Europe, bordering nine other nations, that since 1996 has been wracked by a brutal and unstaunchable war in which millions have died. And yet, despite its epic proportions, it has received little sustained media attention. In this deeply reported book, Jason K. Stearns vividly tells the story of this misunderstood conflict through the experiences of those who engineered and perpetrated it.

Historia
On October 3, 1993, Task Force Ranger was dispatched to seize two high-profile lieutenants of a Somali warlord. Special Forces troops were transported by ground vehicles and helicopters, and the mission was meant to be over within the hour. They quickly found themselves under heavy fire, and two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down. With a hastily organized relief column many hours away, the American troops faced a desperate battle for survival.

Better than the Movie
Revisado: 06-02-24
This book gives a ton more detail to the events that unfolded before, during, and after the battle in Mogadishu. It seems that due to poor communication, weak political leadership, and fighting in a chaotic urban environment made the job a lot tougher for the soldiers on the ground. It was interesting to hear from the actual soldier’s perspective rather than watching the well done but slightly misrepresenting film Black Hawk Down.

Historia
The trade in oil, gas, gems, metals, and rare earth minerals wreaks havoc in Africa. During the years when Brazil, India, China, and the other "emerging markets" have transformed their economies, Africa's resource states remained tethered to the bottom of the industrial supply chain. While Africa accounts for about 30 percent of the world's reserves of hydrocarbons and minerals and 14 percent of the world's population, its share of global manufacturing stood in 2011 exactly where it stood in 2000: at 1 percent.

The Looting Machine was a very interesting listen. It dives into several resource states in Africa; The DRC, Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Guinea. It details how a mix of foreign people and companies have reaped massive rewards using sweetheart deals struck with juntas and presidents using cleaver ownership and tax structures. Additionally, how private local companies are corrupted through their ownership structures; individuals on sanctions lists & military leaders. As well as, the inherent problems of being a resource state. I would highly recommend this book.

The book provides a thorough overview of some of SKUNK Works most prolific achievements with several points of view. It shows the “Top Secret” side of our Military Industrial Complex, how some of the bureaucracy works at that level and how’s it’s handled administration to administration. The leaps in technology that the SKUNK Works has produced is astounding, and left our major adversaries in the dust.
You can’t help but be patriotic when find out our Stealth Planes have a Radar Cross Sections the size of ball bearings, flying at Mach 3.2, or at the height of 16 miles over head.
Lastly, it brings a tear to your eye when the plane(s) do a final sonic boom and salute to their leaders Kelly Johnson & Ben Rich.
