Historia
AD, 98. The bustling army base at Vindolanda lies on the northern frontier of Britannia and the entire Roman world. In just over 20 years' time, the Emperor Hadrian will build his famous wall. But for now, defences are weak as tribes rebel against Rome. It falls to Flavius Ferox, Briton and Roman centurion, to keep the peace. But it will take more than just a soldier's courage to survive life in Roman Britain.

Goldsworthy wrote a great first novel
Revisado: 01-27-21
my favorite historian of Rome penned a great novel centering on a brewing war with religious extremists opposing the Roman occupation of Britain. Great characters, economically sharp prose and a terrific plot.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Ulysses S Grant is my hero of the Civil War and reconstruction. His work and accomplishment deserve recognition. This work does this and more - humanizing the military genius with lovely insights.

Historia
Newly elected, Jack Ryan has found that being President is not easy: domestic pitfalls await him at every turn; there's a revolution in Liberia; the Asian economy is going down the tubes; and now, in Moscow, someone may have tried to assassinate the chairman of the SVR - the former KGB - with a rocket-propelled grenade. Were the potential assassins political enemies, the Russian Mafia, or disaffected former KGB? Or is something far more dangerous at work here?

A glimpse into pre-9/11 geopolitical optimism
Revisado: 04-12-19
Tom Clancy shows us the world everyone was expecting after the fall of the USSR: Russia a potential ally, America reaping the benefit of its military R&D and let my apolitical heroes of strong moral fiber. Things didn't quite turn out that way but it's an interesting window into that world.

I love this book and loathe its adaptation for the same reasons. Why?: Stannis, Ellaria and Dorne. They deserved better.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Historia
At the opening of his third novel in an ongoing adventure series by Patrick O'Brian, Jack Aubrey is cruising off Cape Sicie when his friend Stephen Maturin (more serenely situated in Sussex) is informed of the Board's decision regarding Aubrey's prize money, taken after victorious engagement with a Spanish squadron at Cape Santa Maria. The money, five million pieces of eight, is not, as is the custom of war, to be divided among the crews of the four victorious vessels.

Excellent, eerie, short and then it just ends.
Revisado: 10-21-17
Needs a more solid ending, hopefully called Persepolis Rises. Eerie glimpse past the Laconia gate. I loved the setting, the brief interaction with Duarte.
I'm hoping he's portrayed in this interesting sympathetic light. Expanse's villain roster could use this to round it out.

Historia
All good things must come to an end, Constant Listener, and not even Stephen King can write a story that goes on forever. The tale of Roland Deschain's relentless quest for the Dark Tower has, the author fears, sorely tried the patience of those who have followed it from its earliest chapters. But attend to it a while longer, if it pleases you, for this volume is the last, and often the last things are best.
