lettuce has always been a favorite character in the Lucas Davenport books, so having a series all her own is exciting. This one feels right as far as Letty is concerned, and her partner is a good fit for her

Amazing book and Amazing Series

I have read hundreds of Regency and Georgian novels, and this series is one of my top 3 or 4 of them. Stella Riley uses predictable tropes in unpredictable ways, and the depth of characterization is wonderful. You become absorbed with these characters and are thrilled that the series provides you another glimpse of them. Read the entire series, but The Parfit Knight and Cadenza are my favorites. Delightful!

Great Narration but Weaker Edition of the Novel

One thing many people don't know about Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is that she substantially revised the text about 15 years after she first published it. I prefer the original 1818 text, and Audible has an audiobook (narrated by Nico Evers Swindell) that matches the 1818 version. At least three other Audible offerings I tried follow that longer 1831 revision, including this version with Derek Jacobi.

Jacobi is phenomenal in his reading of the text, but as I teach the original version of the novel, I cannot use this audiobook in class or with my reading-challenged students. Sigh!

The book is OK, I guess, except that the initial premise comes straight from the Disney movie Tangled, even down to the cantankerous pet and the double-crossing thief, jewels, and rebellious daughter. That lack of originality made the first couple of hours boring and I almost stopped. Instead, I fast forward through those parts and managed to finish it. I liked Books 1 and 3 better - at least the stories weren’t so obvious a copy.

Narrator ruins it

This story and the series is a pleasant diversion, with the characters and stories that are entertaining. This installment's heroine, however, is a bit annoying. She's so pushy and has a chip on her shoulder that makes her constant attempts to one-up the hero distracting and unattractive.

The biggest issue with the series, though, is the narrator. Her forceful and constant emphases within the sentences and overly enunciated language verges on the melodramatic. I managed to get through this story but I'm not sure I can take another novel with the same narrator.

What I love most about this is how faithfully Lizzie and Darcy's personalities are recreated in this new version. I have read P&P perhaps 25 times and I love this opportunity to be with the couple again.

What did you love best about The Grendel Affair?

I like the mix of humor, mythology, and adventure. The author reminds me of Molly Harper.

What did you like best about this story?

The premise of the agency keeping supernaturals a secret was appealing. The protagonist will be interesting to follow as she grows from bumpkin to competent agent.

What about Johanna Parker’s performance did you like?

She's a good reader - a little too heavy-handed with the Southern accent for us real Southerners, though.
