The most autobiographical of John le Carré’s works, A Perfect Spy follows two narratives: the manhunt for the double agent Magnus Pym, and the makings of the man in question—told in his own words.

Excellent performance of one of the all time best!
Revisado: 03-25-25
Not much needs to be said, this is one of the best espionage novels ever written, and one of LeCarre’s greatest novels. To my mind this is the best audio performance of this novel, period!

Great story, strange narration
Revisado: 02-19-25
First let me say that initially I was not into this book or the way the dialogue was written. However, as I continued along, I think that the story was great, it was the performance that took away from the story. At times I wondered if this voice was AI, as it hardly differentiated from character to character and often times created a strange cadence that took away from the story. This is a good read, he isn’t on the same level as Alan Furst, but few people are.

Entertaining, but comically bad at times
Revisado: 02-01-25
Let me begin this by stating that I enjoyed the first two books, and if he had decided to stick to his “unrealistic” but entertaining motif I might have liked this too. The dialogue is comically bad for a good portion of this book, and while I’m sure the author has his reasons, the kindergarten description of a counterespionage investigation is embarrassing. Also, while I’m sure the author was trying to do an homage to Le Carre with one of his major plot points, it came off more like a thrift store attempt at copying Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
On the vocal performance, this was not the right person for this. Part of her problem was just some of the basic terminology was mispronounced, saying N.O.C, instead of “knock”. While she also had some bad dialogue to deal with, her whole inflection and performance was just not right for this book.
Overall, it is certainly entertaining, but a swing and a miss third effort for this author.

Historia
George Smiley has left the Circus. With the wreckage of the West’s spy war against the Soviets strewn across Europe, he has eyes only for a more peaceful life. And indeed, with his marriage more secure than ever, there is a rumor that George Smiley might almost be happy. But Control has other plans. A Russian agent has defected in the most unusual of circumstances, and the man he was sent to kill in London is nowhere to be found. Smiley reluctantly agrees to one last simple task: interview Szusanna, a Hungarian émigré and employee of the missing man, and sniff out a lead.

Absolutely outstanding
Revisado: 01-15-25
I will admit I had low expectations for this. I thought no one could find the right pacing or match the dialogue of such a legendary writer. I can happily say I was dead wrong. This was a fantastic addition to my favorite “series” of books. Everything about it was right, and if I didn’t know it wasn’t written by JLC I wouldn’t have guessed. In the same right, he adds some additional depth to a character I truly enjoyed, describing GS being operational, and giving us a glimpse of what in later books was just legend. As always SRB makes anything you listen to amazing, but especially his work on the Smiley books.

Give this some love
Revisado: 12-19-24
I think this book gets a bad rep. The story is great as always, though you have to take some inconsistencies related to MI-5 and MI-6 but that is pretty easy to ignore. I thought the story flowed well and was especially compelling as it went along. Once again the performance by Julia is impeccable.

Historia
When a body is hauled from the River Tyne, Sarah Tucker heads to Newcastle for a closer look. She identifies the dead woman as Private Detective Zoë Boehm, but putting a name to the corpse only raises further questions. Did Zoë kill herself, or did one of her old cases come back to haunt her? Coincidence is an excuse that soon appears pretty unconvincing. Sarah can’t leave until she’s found the answers to her questions, however dangerous they might turn out to be.

It has really been fun coming back and Listening to these after all the Slough House books. You can see the glimpses of some of his later characters. That is not to say that these are solely unique and enjoyable..because they certainly are. The vocal performance is fantastic, doesn’t take you out of the story at all. Great all around listen!
