I absolutely loved this book. this story - because it IS a story - includes both a bredth and depth that I delight in. The philosophical elements entwine beautifully with the real and add meaning and texture to a story we all are familiar with on the surface.
I can't recommend it highly enough.

Historia
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

I suffered because. . .

... the story itself is engaging enough to drag me along through a painful performance. . . .just the print copy if you have the luxury of time and eyeballs that serve you for the purpose of reading.
two stars because it wasn't completely unbearable.
