Historia
On an April day in 1937, the sky opens and fire rains down upon the small Spanish town of Guernica. Seventeen-year-old Sibi and her family are caught up in the horror. Griff, an American military attaché, pulls Sibi from the wreckage, and it’s only the first time he saves her life in a span of hours. When Germany claims no involvement in the attack, insisting the Spanish Republic was responsible, Griff guides Sibi to lie to Nazi officials. If she or her sisters reveal that they saw planes bearing swastikas, the gestapo will silence them—by any means necessary.

Couldn’t Finish
Revisado: 03-31-25
I’m unsure if it was the writing or the narration that killed this title for me, but I couldn’t finish it. There was a great deal of repetitive wording that challenged my ability to become suspended in the story. As well as narration that didn’t allow for the characters to come through, but saturated their dialogue with too much of her voice unnaturally. I gave a good try …picked it up several times, but just couldn’t stick with it.

Well…
Revisado: 11-14-24
Sometimes it just doesn’t work. I couldn’t quiet decide if it was the inconsistency of the character’s personality’s or the narrator who’s tone was the same whether the character was whispering, warring, or weeping… but it all fell short and meh. The plot was okay if predictable, but the whole of this work (audio and text combined) is not that good.

Is she supposed to be an older woman in the beginning of the novel? The narrator’s voice sounds much older than thirty and is throwing me off visually. Will update review later in.

Worst Narration

I honestly can’t review past chapter 4 - the narrator had no ability to manage voice-variations and squealed horribly in high pitch utterances for the king when thundering-anger inflections were required. Badly done.

A Good Story That Wants to Be Better
Revisado: 04-28-24
The plot construction of numerous past lives and their narratives (as well as their narrators) were done well. They the cultural and period differences and the relationship s were complimentary and interesting. The issue is with the current life and narrator. It - and she - are weak. Her voice and inflection choices felt disruptive to the rest of the story. The most disappointing aspect was the ending wherein the essence of the “real love story” is too quickly described and wrapped up. Then the epilogue where we’re swept along to Maui for surf lessons (🤦♀️) …which felt painfully contrived, and made worse by mispronounced Hawaiian places/beaches (can time be allocated to look up how to say words that narrators don’t know how to say?) making it all seem silly and unsophisticated.

Character Transformation on Point
Revisado: 04-15-24
Good story. The protagonist’s transformation is very well done… the Nazi politics and edicts - as integrated into family culture - were well written into the plot. The overall subterfuge heartbreaking. And the ending very bittersweet.

Splice of Life
Revisado: 06-14-23
Good character development for multiple characters, narratives, and converging stories. Also, “the dark-matter” topics of Korean culture felt immersive more than voyeuristic. It was over too soon - left me wanting more!
