Thought provoking; first half better than rest
Revisado: 02-09-23
Interesting book. First half left me laughing and crying constantly. I’m pretty cynical already but the amount of BS jobs was even worse than I thought. Then it slowly turned into a weird mix of Marxism and academic research, culminating in a call to consider UBI. While I don’t agree with the author’s conclusions, it was a thought provoking book.

Historia
In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots' one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a handing off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted, and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck? Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time.

Best books I’ve read in a while
Revisado: 01-25-21
I read quite a few business, psychology, etc. books with a focus on decision making over the last 2 years and this is by far one of the best. The other of course being Thinking Fast and Slow. Most of the rest were pretty skippable. Don’t skip this one.

Historia
A million-copy seller, Henry Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson is a classic economic primer. But it is also much more, having become a fundamental influence on modern “libertarian” economics of the type espoused by Ron Paul and others. Called by H. L. Mencken “one of the few economists in history who could really write,” Henry Hazlitt achieved lasting fame for this brilliant but concise work.

Never been more relevant
Revisado: 08-14-20
The author is articulate and has depth of thought that has been all but lost in the intervening decades filled with an ever faster race toward short term thinking by politicians as well as the general population of Western countries. This book has never been more relevant. Required reading.

Decent overall story but horribly told
Revisado: 06-18-20
Overall story arc was solid. But I felt myself rolling my eyes every few minutes with so many ridiculous cliches, stereotypes, clear lack of knowledge of computers, and extremely angry women. Actually kind of sexist in a way.

Historia
The Return of the King is the towering climax to J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy that tells the saga of the hobbits of Middle-earth and the great War of the Rings. In this concluding volume, Frodo and Sam make a terrible journey to the heart of the Land of the Shadow in a final reckoning with the power of Sauron. In addition to narrating the prose passages, Rob Inglis sings the trilogy’s songs and poems a capella, using melodies composed by Inglis and Claudia Howard, the Recorded Books studio director.

Historia
With grace and wit, America's foremost economist examines the boom-and-bust that led to the stock market crash of 1929. Economic writings are rarely notable for their entertainment value, but this widely admired best-seller is the exception. Galbraith's light touch makes his expert analysis of America's greatest financial disaster a surprisingly engaging listen for anyone.

Great book; especially relevant today
Revisado: 05-24-20
It's amazing to see how often history rhymes ;) I very much recommend this book, both in spite of and because of this age. However, I have no clue how this release made it past QA. The chapter cuts seem to match audio cassettes or something since they are roughly the same length and have no relation to any sort of logical break.

Historia
In his first book for a general audience, Mandelbrot, with co-author Richard L. Hudson, shows how the dominant way of thinking about the behavior of markets-a set of mathematical assumptions a century old and still learned by every MBA and financier in the world-simply does not work. As he did for the physical world in his classic The Fractal Geometry of Nature, Mandelbrot here uses fractal geometry to propose a new, more accurate way of describing market behavior.

One of the best books i’ve ever read on markets
Revisado: 03-31-20
This book should be required reading for anyone interested in investing, markets, or finance. Basic familiarity with options and mathematics is extremely helpful and understanding this book, but it is overall quite approachable.

Historia
Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn’s startling book led, almost 30 years later, to Glasnost, Perestroika, and the "Fall of the Wall". One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich brilliantly portrays a single day, any day, in the life of a single Russian soldier who was captured by the Germans in 1945 and who managed to escape a few days later. Along with millions of others, this soldier was charged with some sort of political crime, and since it was easier to confess than deny it and die, Ivan Denisovich "confessed" to "high treason" and received a sentence of 10 years in a Siberian labor camp.

Historia
A business parable about how to create a start-up that won't trap you when you want to sell it. According to John Warrillow, the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is to build a business that relies too heavily on them. Thus, when the time comes to sell, buyers aren't confident that the company-even if it's profitable-can stand on its own. To illustrate this, Warrillow introduces us to a fictional small business owner named Alex who is struggling to sell his advertising agency.

Overall good advice
Revisado: 11-30-19
The book contains overall good advice. I appreciated the way that it illustrates concepts via a story, so the reader can intuitively learn, though frankly the story was obviously contrived and overly predictable. But that’s not why you buy such a book. Additionally, the narration was pretty terrible.
