Historia
In the eighth installment of Alexander McCall Smith’s best-selling Isabel Dalhousie series, the inquisitive heroine helps a new friend discover the identity of her father. Jane, a visiting Australian philosopher on sabbatical in Edinburgh, has more questions than answers. Adopted at the age of six, she knows little about her father, other than he was a student in Edinburgh years ago. Always up for a challenge, Isabel is more than happy to help.

Fuller picture the inside of Isabel’s head
Revisado: 03-21-25
Isabel’s inner musings and tangents as well as her hang-ups and naivety are on full display in this book. She’s human, makes mistakes and second guesses herself which is part of the fun. However, this was the first book where I felt at times she was just being a pill.

Historia
“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late....” These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine - a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise. Odd, considering he didn’t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?

Enjoyed a few surprising twists!
Revisado: 12-24-24
The “boring” detective Hawthorne is growing on me and the plot was very entertaining. I like Rory Kinnear’s narration very much, read some other less positive comments here about his portrayal of female voices—I thought they fit the characters well.

Historia
Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

Another great Ballard/Bosch book
Revisado: 12-05-24
Really enjoyed this installment in the Ballard/Bosch series. The narration was excellent. This book contained several plot lines that were just a tiny bit more predictable and resolved more quickly than usual in my opinion, but was still very fun to read and I look forward to the next one.

Historia
Geoffrey Lushington, Mayor of Marlow, dies suddenly during a Town Council meeting. When traces of aconite—also known as the queen of poisons—are found in his coffee cup, the police realize he was murdered. But who did it? And why? The police bring Judith, Suzie and Becks in to investigate as Civilian Advisors right from the start, so they have free rein to interview suspects and follow the evidence to their heart’s content, which is perfect because Judith has no time for rules and standard procedure.

While the narrative lagged at points and didn’t have as much physical action as the previous two books, the characterizations and plot twists kept me engaged.

Historia
Alice didn’t think her maternity leave would involve so much, well, murder. Before becoming proud new moms, she and her friends bonded more than members of a prenatal group usually would, as they became accidental amateur sleuths and solved a crime together. Now, with all this behind them and Alice’s son Jack somehow already a year old, Alice is keen to finally catch up on some sleep. So when an opportunity presents itself in the unlikely form of an eco-protest, Alice and her friends willingly chain themselves to trees and settle in as an excuse to get some overdue rest.

On the surface, Richard Ainsworth has life where he wants it. Middle-aged navel gazing and Olympic levels of procrastination are exactly what rural life in France should be about. Then crisis hits his posh B&B when redoubtable housekeeper, Madame Tablier, is accused of murder. Even more surprisingly, it's the murder of a former fiancé, turned brother-in-law. None of which the stubborn old woman denies.

Descriptions of war are exceptionally good
Revisado: 02-15-24
A very talented writer, (I loved Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand) yet this book reads like a director’s cut in that it is too long. Every scene/character described in minutest detail makes the story drag until the last few chapters. Occasionally, modern vocabulary/concepts like “personal boundaries” showed up to pull me out of the story. The later chapters on the war are astonishingly good though.
