This book is one empty superlative after another - nothing is explained. We simply hear how wonderful machine learning is - how it will change business etc etc - where is the beef? Not in this bun.

Historia
On a warm spring evening in South Los Angeles, a young man is shot and killed on a sidewalk minutes away from his home, one of the thousands of Black Americans murdered that year. His assailant runs down the street, jumps into an SUV, and vanishes, hoping to join the scores of killers in American cities who are never arrested for their crimes. But as soon as the case is assigned to Detective John Skaggs, the odds shift.

One of the best non-fiction books I have ever read
Revisado: 03-28-15
If you could sum up Ghettoside in three words, what would they be?
An Important Book
What did you like best about this story?
When I told people I was reading this book - they said, "Oh, that sounds like fun (not)." It has turned out to be an incredible piece of non-fiction - extremely well written - emphatic without being disingenuous. I would group it with Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and Agee's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men - maybe better.
Which character – as performed by Rebecca Lowman – was your favorite?
This book is not about favorite characters. Rebecca Lowman's narration captures the ethos of this book brilliantly.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not necessary
Any additional comments?
This is a perfect pairing of author and narrator

On Second Thought
Revisado: 05-26-13
Subsequent to reading this book, investigative journalists have made public that Facebook rivals all modern fascist governments in trampling individual privacy. Facebook is not squeamish denying complicity with Russian ad purchases influencing our elections nor does it blush when lying about privacy violations.
Facebook does show remorse when caught in the lie though - then it is Ms. Sandberg who frets and decries the practices of her own organization to us.
Facebook, like many other firms, warehouses vast amounts of cash in secret offshore accounts, avoiding taxes for roads and bridges that bring their employees to work.
As COO of Facebook, Ms. Sandberg, necessarily has knowledge and executes on these policies and programs. She knows her boss, Zuckerberg, lies to its global user base, to the American people, and to the U.S. Government about privacy violations and the Russians.
Regarding the book, Ms. Sandberg’s relationship with Lawrence Summers is especially curious. Summers you may remember is the misogynist former President of Harvard and a bloated ego in the Obama administration. His Obama years were marked by an inability to get along with only his brilliant self. Clearly to become sponsored by Mr. Summers, Ms. Sandberg must be a master at pandering to Mr. Summer’s ego and more specifically, his belief that women are inferior.
Lurking beneath the weak prose is a story about the ease of ascension facilitated by birth and social network. This is not a criticism; it is the way for many in this world – whether your child is seeking a union card or a fast track position in a corporation. However, Ms. Sandberg’s success is trumpeted as a major accomplishment simply based on gender disadvantage. It is fairer to remove the gender lens and look at the person.
This a tale told by a moral-neuter calling for women ‘to grab an oar, jump on the slave ship, and Lean In’ – To where and to what end are not places to pause unless the revenue stream is at risk. The book is a strut disconnect from reality and purpose.

Essentially an infomercial for Navigenics
Revisado: 06-04-12
This is not a book - it is an advertisement for the author's company, Navigenics. It represents the a core problem with healthcare - physicians hawking BS under the guise of science. The cover should read "Advertisement" in large letters across the top, subtitled "will only enrich the author and do nothing for your health." The content is recycled news releases from various mass publications.

Historia
The hidden history of Wall Street and the White House comes down to a single American concept: confidence. Both centers of power, New York and Washington, learned how to manufacture it - until August 2007, when that confidence began to crumble. Ron Suskind here tells the story of what happened next, as Wall Street struggled to save itself while a man with little experience and soaring rhetoric emerged from obscurity to usher in "a new era of responsibility".

Obama's first report card
Revisado: 11-13-11
What is so disturbing about this book is Suskind's assessment that Obama is no task master and lacks courage and conviction. Further, Obama should have read Sutton's "The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't " prior or forming his team - he would never hired Larry Summers.

Historia
The tsunami of cheap credit that rolled across the planet between 2002 and 2008 was more than a simple financial phenomenon: it was temptation, offering entire societies the chance to reveal aspects of their characters they could not normally afford to indulge. The Greeks wanted to turn their country into a pinata stuffed with cash and allow as many citizens as possible to take a whack at it. The Germans wanted to be even more German; the Irish wanted to stop being Irish.

A Snarky "Analysis" of the New Third World
Revisado: 11-13-11
Compared to Lewis' other books this one is weak. Lewis chooses national and regional "character" to snark about (not explain) the meltdown. The tone and approach is flimsy. The real question is "where were the adults" (Government) and why didn't a single government throw a yellow flag and blow the whistle. AND most important where were the basic metrics ithat would illuminate a tipping point. In "The Big Short", Suskind's "Confidence Men" and Markopolis' "No One Would Listen," it is clear that many individuals have developed measures that define what is not sustainable. A more interesting book would be why, in the Age of Data, does the world economy still run on relationships, assumptions and conflict avoidance.

Historia
This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon.

A false impression of one's own importance.
Revisado: 04-11-11
This author was in desperate need of an editor who could have distilled it into one sentence: "It is all about ME ME ME!" Further, The sex in this book is thinly disguised rape - so if you like your sex violent and one-sided, you will like this book Finally, this is an opportunity for those who chronically take credit for the collective work of many people to bathe in shallow, repetitive, self-righteous delusion.

We have long attributed man's violent, aggressive, competitive nature to his animal ancestry. But what if we are just as given to cooperation, empathy, and morality by virtue of our genes? What if our behavior actually makes us apes? What kind of apes are we?

Important Book
Revisado: 04-07-09
Among the many interesting ideas here is the notion that "strength is weakness" - We are genetically programmed to have a sense of right and wrong. Consequently power should be used to create fairness and harmony and when it is used tyrannically, the weak and the helpless rise up bite holes in the scrotum of the tyrant, squeeze out his testicles then do him in. Got to love ape justice - no rehab centers for them.
