Loved the story, the pacing, and the narration. It was the first time I’ve listened on 1x speed in years.

I love Greg Iles and the Cage novels. It’s my favorite series. I was so disappointed in the story. Not the content of the story as much as the context. The previous six novels were so wonderfully unwound and the characters were rich. Aside from Ray, these new characters were stereotypes with nothing real underneath. It led to a lack of connecting with anyone else new to the Penn Cage world (okay - maybe Sharlot) and the story fell flat.

Once we got to the Mom story, this really took off. Up until then, it wasn’t clear that Colin was enjoying the process of reading his own book aloud.

Ballard and Bosch give me the best of both worlds. A new heroine that will eventually take the place of Bosch in my life and a real progression of life that Bosch’s story is headed toward. You can tell that Connelly loves Bosch so he’s not cheapening him just to keep the stories going.

I always enjoy the Amos decker stories, but this one is the best yet. Not only is Baldacci‘s method of laying out the story brilliant, but the narration is flawless. Those two elements together make this a book that’s hard to turn off.

David Hudson is clearly a Constitutional scholar. His knowledge of the history of the constitution and Supreme Court cases are astounding. He presents each lecture in a very compact way that is easy to listen to and for the most part, the language isn't strictly designed for lawyers or law students. In some lectures, I had to stop the audio and go look up a word or two, but mostly the delivery is on an undergraduate collegiate level in terms of vocabulary.
The only issue I had with the audiobook was the lack of audio quality (sirens in the background, loud background white noise, etc.) and the lack of editing (mistakes were not edited out; diction problems weren't addressed when they happened; the pacing was inconsistent throughout - sometimes I thought my app has crashed because the pauses were so long in certain places.)
Hudson is obviously a dynamic speaker. By the time you get to the 4th or 5th lecture, you can understand why he narrated this himself. The first few lectures are very mechanical. Once he loosens up and gets comfortable (and the listener gets used to the audio in the background), it's an easy listen.
If you are at all interested in the creation and inner workings of the US Constitution, this is a great book to start that research.

A great listen. The narrator is flawless and the writing is exemplary. Just when you thought you knew what was going on, it changed. Then changed again. And again. Even the epilogue had my mouth agape. Highly recommended.

Baldacci once again brings it home with Amos Decker, as Amos teams up with his former partner to revisit their first homicide case as detectives in the Burlington, OH police force. Amos is once again his perfect self, just as blunt and judgmental as he ever was. I love how Baldacci grows his characters bit by bit, chapter by chapter, book by book. Amos changes so subtly we don't recognize it until the book is over. Reminds me of how Walter White evolved over 5 years in Breaking Bad. Baldacci's writing is just that good. And Brewer and Cassidy are simply the perfect pair to listen to. I can't wait for the next one!

Main character a dichotomy

I was very excited to listen to this book. As an avid sports fan, any story set in the world of sports piques my interest. The story starts off well, with the QB main character living a charmed life as a Heisman hopeful and a collegiate national championship looming in the future season. When Colt decides to bet a little in the offseason, he finds himself going from a winning streak to a losing streak quickly, leading him to make decisions that could affect his college career and NFL prospects.
The story was pretty good, although predictable throughout. The one part of the story that wasn't predictable was the change in attitude and personality of the main character as the story progressed. Colt was bothered by inner turmoil due to his decisions but failed to do anything about it, which left me scratching my head. His mental weakness popping up whenever the circumstances weren't just perfect led me to wonder how a guy like this could have the mental skills to lead anyone, especially a high-ranking collegiate football team.
I would have enjoyed this story more if I liked the main character, which I did not. We are led to believe this guy has it all together, but a little adversity left Colt with the mental capacity of a child, not a grown man. The other character (Frank) that obviously had a weakness in gambling and drinking had a much more plausible emotional ride, and I sympathized with him more than the main character. I was rooting for Frank, not for Colt, which I believe is not the author's intention.
Once The Fix was set, the story blazed along wonderfully and ended well (although, again, predictable). The exposition was great, too. It was just the middle of the book that didn't match with the beginning and end, and while I understand why the author made those choices, it just didn't connect the story well.
The narration was good - just the right amount of character voicings that distinguished the dialogue and made the conversations believable.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

It takes a while to get into this story, but once you do, it runs pretty smoothly. The difficult part is understanding the facts as they are presented in relation to the path of the plot. The author does a good job of settling into the story once the exposition is completed, but the exposition is muddled and disjuncted enough to scratch your head more than once. The narrator does really well with all the characters save one - the main character of the story. The cadence and timbre of his voice just isn't suited for a PhD, a man on death row, and man with plenty of moral blameworthiness in his life.
